  1. Might as well update mine as well… Chewy, gloves, iPod, phone, pen, wallet. Most of the time this is spread over the dash of the truck and I normally don’t have anything on my person lol… If were doing a standby at one of those freaky, discussing rave trippy festivals I normally carry alcohol wipes, hygiene to them really isn’t a concern.
  2. In regards to the gay gene: lol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbdKAZyiwCU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SV4RSgsOSug
  3. I live in a very multicultural community including Muslims. I know one Muslim guy here is gay, whether he has come out I don’t know? All I can say is, his not dead...
  4. Yeah thanks, I get the picture now...
  5. Indeed! I think this could be a very interesting debate and topic of conversation. Were doing a project at school that’s sort of relevant to this, so...
  6. the brit what’s your opinion on the subject?
  7. Well to me homosexuality isn’t really a big deal, I to have friends that are gay. I’m pretty sure most people don’t really have an opinion about gay marriage and probably wouldn’t care. As far as I know it’s not really a big issue in Australia. At school there are two kids (male) that are ‘going out’ while at first it was a shock to most kids they soon got over it. Living in a country town there’s this perception of being a ‘man’ and at first theses kids were horribly teased and taunted but thankful this has stopped but then again they are very good at come backs… There’s now this perception of them being together as being cute and they get more attention from the girls than most guys! I haven’t really looked into to it nor do I really care but maybe these people who kick up a stick about gay marriage have had a bad experience or come from a certain religion that condemns homosexuality, then again maybe there board and have nothing better to do than to belittle people with different beliefs. Just my thoughts.
  8. Well in light of all the volunteer threads on this forum I though it might be interesting to find out what volunteers do for paid employment? Personally, apart from going to school I work as a sports trainer with a football club and do some occasional paid event first aid work and massage. Volunteer wise I’m with a big first aid squad doing event coverage, I’ve just started as a fire-fighter and do some work in a local hospital. I’ve never had the desire to work for McDonalds or for the local supermarket. I thought well I have an interest in medical stuff and want to be a paramedic when I leave school so I might as well see if I could get paid to do it. Oh and the other good thing is I’ve never had to pay to do any of my courses! There seems to be this stereotype of volunteers draining the welfare system, lack of personal hygiene, whackers ect… But in the 7 years I’ve been volunteering I’ve only came across these undesirable types a few times, we have some people that are a bit strange but that’s all. I’ve volunteer along side a heap of amazing people. What’s your job?
  9. Little girl kicked in head while learning to milk a cow at the Melbourne Show.
  10. We have it in our wildfire kits for treating burns. From what I've heard it’s excellent when you’ve gotta get a firey from the front line and you don’t have much time to worry about treating them until you get to the staging area. You can wrap it around there burn while your running back to the truck. I guess it’s for infection prevention. Gets pretty messy up the front.
  11. hehe come to Australia and do a double Bachelor Degree of Nursing/Bachelor of Emergency Health. You can work as a paramedic and a CC/ED nurse.
  12. Feel free! We could do with a few extra hundred or so volunteers

  14. That was a long time ago… Well all went well! We ended having 4 advanced first aiders (US equivalent of an EMT- We treated 36 patients over the 3 days of those we had 8 go down with minor heat stress and one with sever dehydration. We had 3 paramedic transports (1 urgent) and 1 referred to the local ED. 300 band aid requests, 3 liters of sunscreen and 1000 bottles of water and plenty of hydrolyte. Saturday night we had a minor security situation, ending up having a group of 16 and 17 years olds throwing there guts up from drinking to much alcohol (alcohol free event) nothing the police couldn’t have handle. We were the only first aid people there, no EMS although the paramedics were only a phone call away. Facility and equipment wise we had a massive room with 2 massive air conditioners, a fridge, sink with hot + cold water, beds and the all important TV! We were all commed up with security and event staff. We had an ATV and golf buggy. The event is sponsored by quiet a large Australian Insurance Company that insured us with Public Liability ($5 Million), Professional Indemnity ($5 Million), Products Liability ($5 Million), Capital Benefits (Death and total disablement $70,000), Medical Benefits (non Medicare costs up to $1,200) It was all in writing and singed by the appropriate people.
  15. It doesn’t matter what level you are, if you stop at an accident and do something as basic as control someone’s bleeding or tilting their head back to secure an airway than that can mean the difference between life and death. I’d much rather have someone come help me if I was involved in an accident instead of someone just standing there waiting for EMS to arrive.
  16. I’ll go with what’s already been said… Generally if there’s been an accident and EMS are already on scene I wouldn’t stop unless it looked like they needed help. Coming back from a sports trainer’s conference one night we came across an accident that had involved 3 cars and only 2 ambulances and a copper car on scene. The paramedics were busy working on the 2 unresponsive people trapped in their car so we helped the people who were sitting on the side of the road, putting on collars and reassuring them until more trucks arrived. Living in a rural area it sometimes pays to stop as it can be anything up to an hour for a second unit to arrive. Generally the SES rescue and CFA fire guys have a pretty good handle on first aid, no point in having an overcrowded scene.
  17. This might be a bit much but if you really want them to learn something, video tape a mock accident wear a rider falls off the horse then guide them through what to do then play it back and talk about it. We do this with the motocross flaggy’s and officials, works well.
  18. What gets me is if someone started a new post about the same subject or related in some way then they would be yelled at and people would post links to old threads??
