How to flow smoothly and not be a klutz?
Timmy replied to AnthonyM83's topic in General EMS Discussion
Well I am a cadet or what you guys call an explorer. I’m the youngest by about 20years, it’s hard sometimes, I too take a lead roll in most situations as the 3 other members I work with are either new or have no idea. One particular member I dread going on duty with as he is old and really has no idea, to give you an example, he was called to a patient, he arrived about 2 mins before me but as soon as I arrived he got straight up to let me in, I dunno why, but he does it with every patient. He also has failed all our courses and skills maintains programs but they keep him in purely to keep up our numbers, as we lack volunteers. I know what you mean when members are to emergent about all patients, we have a 4th year med student and he’s hopeless, he panics and carries on like a pork chop yelling out medical mumbo jumbo that no one understands, try’s new procedures they learnt in uni the day before and rushes everything. There’s not much you can do about it, maybe talk to your partner, tell him that you think he works to fast and he’s putting patients welfare at risk. Make sure if he’s going to do something like adjust the stretcher that you’re aware of it. It seems kind of weird that he just does things out of the blue with out saying that he’s doing it and you must drop everything in aid of the patient. Maybe something along the lines of “I’m going to move the bed, could you support the head end”. It seems you need to communicate better, the only way this is achieved it if you speak up and openly discuss any problems that you might have and ways to resolve them in the future. He may not be aware of what he is actually doing. -
You might be working for Rural EMS If......

And so what if we do lol… If your still using Oxy-Viva’s, pakka wakers, canvas stretchers, the old green BVM’s and the sirens that sound like an air raid siren lol Responding to an car roller over on the back of the fire truck cause its to muddy to drive the ambulance in… The helicopter has to fly above the ambulance because the location is that remote it doesn’t register on GPS. Setting off a distress flair because we couldn’t get any radio or mobile service. -

lol so this dosn't just happen here.... -
Well I have also encountered this many times. When I first arrived on this site I was shocked to find out the EMT-B worked on Emergency Ambulances, even the standard of what you Americans call ‘Paramedic’ is quiet frightening. Now don’t get me wrong, EMT-B would be great as first response, but for continued care and patient transport I think it’s just isn’t good enough. In Australia EMT-B is basically the equivalent to what I am ‘first aid’ in my state you would not be allowed anywhere near an Emergency Ambulance. ‘Basics save lives’ well this is true to some extent, but theoretically speaking your called to an arrest, an EMT-B can only do CPR and Defib, am I right? Well why wouldn’t you want a paramedic there to preform advanced things such as drug therapy, the patient would have a much better survival chance. Why won’t you people realise that the patients care comes before your ego, so is it such a bad thing to have a paramedic on scene?? In my state we have CERT Teams and Ambulance Community Officers there basically EMT-B, they work in remote areas were the Paramedic response time is greater than 20mins, they mainly get called to cardiac problems. There job is to provide first aid/02/defib until the paramedic arrives and takes over. Next we have ASL Paramedic which is a 3 year degree at uni, there able to give drugs and what ever. If you’ve been a paramedic for more than 2 years you can apply to be an Intensive Care Paramedic (MICA) which is another 1 year at uni. After you’ve got some field experience as MICA you can apply to be aeromedical which is another 6 month course at uni. There’s also specialised courses such as paediatrics and clinical support that you can elect to do which take longer. And I’ve heard it only takes 1 year to become a paramedic over in America??

Cough Cough…… Hmmmm Red Cross, we won’t go there lol
-
That I do lol…. That’s my next step lol, to see if St John would cover us and if we need training. Was thinking about getting a retired police horse.
-
Wow you mean to say these ads actually work?? On teenagers?? What is this world coming to! People are actually taking notice…..
-
Right, well main reason I’m ask is were starting to cover a lot of horse events ie show jumping, bush polo, cross country. We have ATV’s but the event managers prefer us not to use them as there noisy, they also prefer for us not to drive our ambulances around.....So I thought why not ride round on horses, might even fit in with the crowd lol. So what are your thoughts now?? LOL about the whole seriousness thing, I was only joking, how can a 17yo not laugh at that!
-
Well this post was intended to be serious…
-
Well my volley organization is military bases, we uste to have 45 cadets so I got to yell at them for not having shinny shoes or there tie wasn’t straight. I had to do a lot of youth leadership courses and even a 3 day boot camp Was fun though.

What are your thoughts of Mounted EMS horses? Is anyone a Mounted EMS Responder/Medic?
-
Tac EMS sounds fun!
-
There pretty good, not really on the graphic side. Just outta interest Michael do you work in EMS or IT?
-
Well I’m a sergeant and nothing like that has happened to me, maybe I should start going to those gala events, maybe I’m not old enough lol…. But great story.
-
Well you learn something new everyday… In my ambulance we have about 7 or 8 different bags, we don’t carry everything in the 1 bag, it’s all separate. It would be a bit hard to fit 8 bags on the stretcher lol. The new GMC's there buying have way to many compartments both inside and outside of the ambulance.

This is just for my state Victoria so 46 serious injuries a day in my state. Last year Victoria’s road toll was 298. This is just figures I’ve pulled off the net so I’m hoping there accurate.

Michael- TAC is a government agency so I’m assuming that they’ve followed the law to a ‘T’ and that all legal revenues have been covered. Anyways it’s been on TV for a bout 4 weeks now, no complaints.
-
Bushy enough man lol… He’s gone down swinging leave it.
-
I have no idea were the footage came from. As far as I know from the Traffic Accident Commission (TAC) provided it. It’s all from real situations.
-
Scorpy_CFS- While I do sympathise for you and your situation, this is something that you and your wife need to talk about. I don’t see how posting on this site would get you any further from were you are standing now. But if you must use it for ‘therapeutic’ purposes then I’m not stoping you.

My school along with a few others and various people form the different community’s and state government are trying to make a new commercial about Teen Substance Abuse (drugs/alcohol) Just wondering if anyone would like to put forward some ideas on scenes/images we could possibly have and also the music. So far were thinking along the lines of: kid OD's at a party, someone calls the ambulance, paramedics rush in start CPR/Intubation/I.V/Needles/Tubes coming from very direction all the scary stuff, all his freinds standing around crying. We also want to have a scene with the police and maybe like some rehab, social worker and the lasting effects drugs can have on you. Any Thoughts??

If you dislike ASSA so much then why do you keep going on about them not giving you a job. Good lord were not judging you, were just saying that there’s other services that require paramedics. Just because you’re having problems with ASSA doesn’t mean the world has to end, look around more. Have you tried www.seek.com.au they have an endless lits of "paramedics urgently required" jobs all over Australia. I don't understand why you continue telling us about your problems, it’s quiet obvious you are not doing everything possible to get a job, and your doing everything in your power to 'bitch' about how there not giving you a job. I’m sure you will find a job, keep trying!

Welcome to the site mate. This is a question you should bring up with the Hospital Administrators, Director of Emergency and EMS Boss. Depending on what sort of insurance they have and what you volunteer job description enables you to do. Your EMS insurance might not cover you as your acting under another medical organization. But ask questions and maybe get something written on paper.

Glad everyone likes it. My school was selected along side some others to help make it. Were working on another, with the focus on youth drinking and drug use.
