  3. Wait.... Is this a joke????
  4. More like a councilor for my PTS and Defib for my cardiac arrest!
  5. Good Lord!! Just for clarification were talking about your own car and not an ambulance??? Would there be any reason as to why on earth you would need this much gear in your own car?? Do you not have an ambulance service close by? Have you ever used it before? Wouldn’t it all expire before you got the chance to use it… Dude how big is your car?
  6. Smelling salts are not used often in Australia. There main purpose was to ‘arouse’ a semi conscious casualty. Typical stereotype would be back in the old days the football trainers would run out to an unconscious casualty place smelling salts under there nose and sponge them down with a bucket of water and a towel, 5 minutes later the player would be out running around again. Is TYLENOL the brand name in America? I though Paracetamol was the actual drug name? In Australia Panadol and nuerophen are the most common ‘analgesic brand names’.
  7. My heart goes out to you Asysin2leads its tough, but at least you guys can do all that advanced stuff, give drugs and transport to hospital. All I can do is give 02 and hope the medics get here bloody fast! Yes I have been in the same situation at a flower and garden show of all places…
  8. Hey everyone, thanks for taking the time to read over this post. I have a problem and would like any advice. I’ve been asked to provide first aid at my town’s biggest event. This event attracts about 40,000 'rev heads’ and car goes from all over the country per day. The event goes for 3 days. It has cars doing burnouts, shine n shine, go to whow, time trials, basically young guys showing off what there cars are capable of. It will be fairly hot over the weekend and alcohol is on tap at the event. The age is expected to be anything from 5 to 35 years old. Now here’s my problem, the event organizer who is a friend of the family has asked me to get a few first aiders together for the event. They don’t want to spend money on a professional first aid provider and there insurance only requires them to have 3 first aid staff. We have full insurance and public liability cover. So here I am with 2 of my friends who are first aiders as well, with minimal equipment, expected to provide first aid to 40,000. My biggest fear is a car going into the crowd! I’ve spoken to the local ambulance boss and he’s happy with what I’m doing so far, there going to have an extra 6 ambulances on for the weekend just in case things get busy. But were the only first aid people at this event, the event covers a huge geographical area! Were getting paid quite well I must said lol. Does any one have any advice as to what equipment is necessary to perform a ‘low’ level of coverage or any other advice?
  9. Noway Man! If I’m not in a uniform don’t bother asking...
  10. Hey UMSTUDENT- I’m a volley with St John Ambulance in the state of Victoria, Australia, our main role is providing event coverage to events such as MX, speedway, festivals, sporting events, you name it were there. We also back up the state ambulance service in such events as bushfire, plane crashes ect. We have around about 3000 volunteers both adults and cadets. I think it’s progressive as they’ve just brought in drug protocols and are updating our fleet and state wide radio communications. They also undercut, bribe, you name it to provide coverage at the ‘good’ events. To volunteer you need to be appropriately qualified, pass a fitness test and sit an interview with a regional officer. Our service is mainly BLS, we do have a lot of Health Care type people in the organisation who can do what ever there qualified in, even open heart surgery in the middle of a mosh pit if they wanted to lol so I guess you could say our scope of practise is what ever your qualified in. Our fleet has around about 100 Stretcher ambulances some 4x4 and there heaps of sedans and station wagons. We do not transport to hospital. We charge $32 an hour to have and ambulance and 2 first aid staff there. Website- www.stjohnvic.com.au or www.stjohn.org.au
  11. In Australia wearing a seatbelt is law! You get a fine if you’re caught without one on, if there vehicle is moving. Of course it will make a difference if you’re not wearing one. Situations such as going through the windscreen, ending up in the backseat and cracking head with your passenger come to mind. Is it not law that you must wear a seatbelt in the US?
  12. Gel Shoes!!! There soooooo comftable.
  13. Well if they have a mental condition, should they have a license? If they feel they can’t drive them selves to the hospital then there well within there right to call for an ambulance. Sure sometimes things do get out of hand and things do go wrong but it’s part of our job. Your stilled paid no matter how many calls you get, if someone feels they need EMS or feels more comftable going by ambulance then why shouldn’t they? I know you haven’t said this in your post but, EMS isn’t all about getting the ‘good’ calls or traumas and getting covered in blood and guts. People look up to us as someone they trust and can turn to when ever they need a hand or things go wrong, no matter how big or small there problem is we should always be happy to help. If things are “getting to you” then maybe you should take some time out. You should never feel that things get to you, this is when things tend to go wrong. In your 30 years of EMS how many vacations have you been on?
  14. I agree 100%!!! Psych patients need to be treated the same if not more than a normal patient. I’ve been studying psych for 3 years. There normal people, they can’t help there condition. Police don’t need to be involved there mentally sick. Sick normal means EMS. Were supposed to be caring people, not just get in the truck sit there and shut up you retard! How would you like it if you had a mental condition and you were treated that way?
  15. Catch phrases like this come to mind: “if you see me running, try to keep up” “Were all going to die”
  16. Or if your like a volley I work with, he carrys a bible in his top pocket if he has to give a patient there last rights!!!
  17. OMG I forgot the most important item, my iPOD!!! Couldn’t live with out it. Portable DVD player or Laptop for those really long extremely boring standbys!
  18. I used a Littmann Master Cardiology (DROOL) the other day for the first time!! You could even hear over the top of the MX bikes. So much better than those stupid durohard ones. :blob4:
  19. Would anyone care to explain what a radiation pager is please??
  20. We wear Huge Bum Bags (Fanny Packs) things when we do bike patrol… But I wouldn’t wear it anywhere else.
  21. The only time I haven’t done manual realignment (Aussie version of in-line alignment) is on a young male who’s C4 was bulging out of his neck, he had no sensation what so ever any were in his body and couldn’t move. I left him there for the chopper medics to deal with!
  22. Just wondering if people still carry/use smelling salts?? What your thoughts on smelling salts are?? I’ve only heard of medics using it back in the 60’s. I found a bottle of it while I was going through the cupboard at our station. I’ve never used it nor seen it used, today was the first time I’ve ever smelt it lol!
  23. Okydoky, Just inquisitive as to why you would carry one. I see your point.
  24. Why on earth would you carry a gluecometer?? Do you work with elderly/diabetic people?
