  1. Well I was mainly talking about the services in Victoria. I don’t really know about services outside of Vic. As far as I know both Rural Ambulance and Metro Ambulance only have ASL or MICA Paramedics. I've never come across a volley paramedic. There’s a CERT team near were I live but I don’t think they've ever been call out. I agree when you say St John should NEVER be a 000 provider. We shouldn’t even be at most events my division covers! I wasn’t bagging out ANSW but I live on the border of VIC & NSW. We called them to one of our duty’s. Out jumps this young guy and an older chap. Young guy didn’t look much older than 19 and the older bloke looked like his dad. This young bloke has a white billabong hat on, blue overalls, and white globe shoes  He then makes the patient move from our stretcher to there’s with out any pain relief. Let my remind you this person had multiple fractures to there L tib/fib, Pain 10/10. I’m sure that most ANSW medics are more professional than that, but this was just my first taste and impression of ANSW. But I don’t think it necessary that they dress like this just because they live in a rural area, the older bloke was in perfect uniform.
  2. In aussie land it’s illegal to have LEDS or sirens in your personal vehicle. All emergency vehicles that have lights and sirens must be clearly marked as to what they are so it has to scream out that the vehicle is a fire truck or ambulance ect. Only exceptions are unmarked cop cars. Personally I think Lights & Sirens in your own car are just stupid. If you need to respond in your own car then maybe your stations should think about getting some more trucks or a response sedan. In my family car I only carry a small first aid kit. Mostly for the bumps and bruises from family picnics or dirtbike riding in the bush with mates ect.
  3. I've been in an ambulance with some pretty stupid medics as well! Some of the stunts they pull are just stupid. Number 1 hate. Tag alongs, they see the ambulance bells n whistles and decide to sit right up there ass. Apparently it makes the cops think its the worried parents following the truck to hospital.
  4. My volley organisation bought me a kit worth $300 (Think $223 US) They fully stock it with what ever we want. We can use as much as we want for personal use and they’ll restock it again for us! All for free no questions asked!
  5. Maybe NSW should follow our lead! Jokes... But seroiusly after last weekend I need my faith back in ANSW! St John an ambulance service.... All I have to say is LOL!! God I'd feel sorry for you if you called 000 and St John turned up! LOL! Biggest BSL team more like biggest wanker brigade!! I was talking about the state ambulance service not event coverage. .
  6. In aussie land you either get ALS paramedics or mobile intensive care paramedics or nothing lol! I don’t see how an EMT/BSL would be beneficial when there are paramedics around. The only BLS teams we have in Australia would be the CERT Team, there volleys who live in very remote communities were the ambulance response time it very long, normally 20 mins +. There mainly there for an arrest or MVA. There work load is about 3 calls a month, its not worth having a professional station there. They drive around in little 4x4 cars with debif, 02 and first response gear. They wait at the scene until the paramedics arrive. There basically there to kick off the chain of survival.
  7. WOW!!!! 9 months part time! Even our DIV 2 Nurses (old peoples nurse) have more training than that. 1 year full time at TAFE. How could you learn everything you needed to know in 9 months!??
  8. As Australia mostly has hot days we always carry ice, bottles of water and the medic keep I.V fluids on Ice. We never go out with at least 12 bottles of water and an cooler box full of ice.
  9. What?? It only takes 2 years to become a medic over there?? America keeps on getting better and better! Maybe I'll come over there to study paramedics lol! Wouldn't y'all love that!
  10. Yeh mushrooms are pretty bad. But ICE is getting really big here! Pretty much if you OD on that your in REALLY BIG TROUBLE! There’s not really a good survival rate for it or making a full recovery. But it’s cheap as chips and gets you high as a kite extremely fast. Yeah I've been threatened a couple of times. But I've had more offers to go back to there tent lol!
  11. lol! When we are trialling this it’s not only first aid that will be on the team. The team will consist of a doctor, intensive care paramedic, cardiac nurse and 2 first aiders. Doctor role is to give advanced cardiac drugs + defib, medic will be responsible for intubation + airway management + ventilation and the cardiac nurse will be helping both the doctor and medic when they need a hand. First aid will be applying the cold packs, scene safety and documentation and what ever else needs to be done.
  12. Picture this. I worked a grave yard shift at a Rave Party. 3am we get a call for assistance. There’s only myself and another member who is a retired nurse (really lovely old duck) on duty. So here we are at 3am with our little torch, response gear and drug bag safely tucked under my arm walking though the bush holding hands and trembling in fear! After 10 minutes of walking around we finally found our patient. The Scene: Tent and a car next to the river with a camp fire, Patient (young hippy lady) laying on ground, under the car and boy friend (clean cut young looking bloke) crying next to her. This event is a 3 day Hippy/Drugo tribadalic concert. Patients is tripping out on a narcotic drug, she is C/O of abdo pain. On further assessment her water had broken and she was about to have a baby. Cut a long story short, the pt didn’t know what she’d taken, how she got under the car or were she was, she just blamed it on the pink bunny rabbit lol! Medics just got there in time for the baby but had a lot of trouble as she was that stoned she couldn’t push! The boyfriend told me that they weren’t going to be back next year! I agreed! The bloke wasnt hippy, he was made to go and was very freaked out. The fun we have lol!
  13. My organisation is currently doing research into this. The deal is we apply cold packs to a patient’s in VF, in an effort to reduce neurological damage and improve the patient’s chance of a full system recovery post arrest. The research is being done as event first aid with out response times to an arrest being under 1-2 mins. It would be interesting to see if there’s much difference between event first response and front line paramedics with different time restraints.
  14. LOL!!! Ohh you know if you do enough hours they buy you an ambulance... Jokes... Nah, it's mainly uniform. If you do enough hours they'll buy you a pretty good trauma bag and fully stock it. They also buy stuff for your belt. eg, shears holder, gloves pouch just little freebies like this. This is the uniform I have. Overalls Overalls 2 peace Short sleeve shirts Long sleeve shirt Jumper Jacket Tie Epaulets Name Badge ID Badge High-Vis Vest High-Vis Polar Lined vest High- Vis Rain jacket BTW our high- vis stuff is a yukk dark green and fluor yellow colour. Disaster Turn Out Bag Helmet White funny overalls for HazMat stuff Face Shield Goggles that look like MX goggles Thick Gloves We look like freaks lol!
  15. Guy I haven’t done the course. EMT training isn’t very well known in Australia. There are only 3 private organisations that offer EMT training. EMT training is only recognised by workplace first and some private companies that do event coverage. This is what I have read on the course contents. I don’t know any further information. Sorry. Airways Management. Bag Valve Mask Resuscitators Manually Triggered Ventilators Oropharyngeal Airways Suction Equipment Laryngeal Mask Airway ETT intubation (under paramedic supervision)
  16. I've done motor races and concerts. We always cover our local motocross, supercross, aernacross, enduro, speedway, drags you get the picture lol. I've also done concerts. We have an event that goes for 3 days, 1 hour from any form of civilisation in the middle of the bush, 10,000 drugos and it's normally really hot. There’s 60 first aiders for the 3 days and all we pretty much do is drug related stuff. Last year we treated just over 400 patients with 25 timed critical. The police can't touch them as it's on private property so they go nuts! People get that stoned they do stupid stuff like ride a motorbike into a tent full of people. I've also done the Big Day Out which has a crowd of about 70,000. It’s in summer so it’s hot! We normally have 200 first aid staff for that day. At both events our organisation has a trauma centre set up with doctors and nurses with full hospital equipment. First aid staff are mainly the first response.
  17. Don't you have like overalls or something? What about protection gear? That seems dangerous to me. So you cut up cars in your own cloths?
  18. Airway Management covers intubations. I.V, were taught how to put a line in and then up them up on I.V Saline. As I said this any sort of EMT course is only for workplace first aid and event coverage. They don’t ride on ambulances.
  19. While were on the subject of training and EMT's. This is what the aussie EMT-B course is: Is there much difference? EMT in Australia is mainly for workplace first aid and event coverage. Anatomy and Physiology Primary Assessments (Basic Life Support) Patient Assessment and History Taking Documentation of Records & Reports Scene Size Up - Kinematics Airway Hypoxia Bag Valve Mask Resuscitators Manually Triggered Ventilators Oropharyngeal Airways Suction Equipment Airway - Advanced Laryngeal Mask Airway Cardiovascular Emergencies Respiratory Emergencies Cardiac Defibrillation Automated External Defibrillation) Diabetes and Altered Mental States Poisoning and Overdoses Shock and Haemorrhage Moving and Lifting Patients Environmental Exposure Soft Tissue Injuries Chest Injuries Pharmacology Inhaled Analgesia (Entonox/Penthrane) Medication Administration (Injection Procedures) Head and Spinal Injuries Musculoskeletal Injuries. 20. Hmmm... A bunch of advanced first aiders responding to calls. That’s like me working on a emergency ambulance = SCARY!
  21. What?? You payed $1000 to do a first aid course… That’s a little OTT. Just one question. Are EMT-B supervised by an ASL paramedic on all calls?
  22. Well I don’t know what to say!..... Were did these people get there qualifications from??
  23. Oh yeh I'm aware of that... But we still see a lot of medical emergencies as well. It's heading into summer now so we do event coverage at a lot of high crowd events. We see a lot of cardiac, respiratory, diabetic, seizures, asthma, arrests, heat related, dehydration, alcohol related, excuses me my water just broke, I forgot my medication at home and all that stuff. I love motocross so I talk about it a lot. Trauma and Medical pretty much even out over the year for us. I know standby isn’t the same as running the truck to call outs.
  24. Please take into account that Australian EMS is way different to what your EMS is like. Our Ambulance services are fully supported and funded by the government, we don’t have any private services. So, as I said I'm sorry, I don't know much about American EMS. It works quiet well. I live in a rural area, the medics only get about 3 call outs a day. So for a low work load area if works perfectly. No mate I'm not EMS. I'm first aid, but from what I've heard your EMT-B is our first aid, give and take a few skills and training. No mate I'm not EMS. I'm first aid, but from what I've heard your EMT-B is our first aid, give and take a few skills and training. Under the emergency management plan the service I volunteer with backs up the paramedics when they need a hand at big emergency’s, (bushfires, big MVAs, storms, HazMat ect)
  25. My bad *definitely* Whoop Whoop I finally leaned how to spell it! You should become an english teacher
