can I beomce an emt with a misdimeanor
Richard B the EMT replied to teamster007's topic in General EMS Discussion
I'm going to play with semantics, again. A pardon means the courts forgive whatever the transgressions, but an expungement (spell check is uncertain of the spelling) means the records, possibly even the pardon itself, are removed from the records, like the transgression never happened in the first place. -
Why not? When he (she?) activates the web cam, all it shows is a beer can.

Careful with the wording. As HellsBells just called you on that, jokingly, that can really be misinterpreted that way. It's that bad joke of no correct way to answer yes or no to the question "Do you STILL beat your wife?" You answer yes, you're beating your wife, answer no, you're no longer beating your wife, meaning you did. -
Would you ALS or BLS this patient and why?

Just shows the FDNY can fill out to 4 letters! LOL -
Just this once, I declare myself a (Para)God! Thou shall tell him this day, to read and document the number as sayeth the blood pressure machine, and not just those divisible by 10. If the number shall be 118, thou shall say and document 118, and ye shall no longer document 120 when 118 is indicated on the dial. If sayeth the dial 112, ye shall say and document 112, Nay shall ye say and document 110! So sayeth the (Para)God! As fund-raising for my temple has fallen drastically short by $5,000,000.00 (only got $1.27, all in pennies), I hereby proclaim my ParaGodhood ended!

In-house FDNY slang shows FAST as Firefighter Assistance & Safety Team. One (Ladder) Truck company is stationed as such on arrival at an "all hands" or larger fire, as a standby rescue team for any other fire fighters who might "go down" during fire fighting operations thereat. -

I have no clue for the NREMT. New York State will, on a case by case basis, review any EMT applicants with any record (other than non-accident involved moving violations), but I don't know how they do with either misdemeanors or criminal act convictions, just that if you have a record when applying, or renewing, you must request such review. I do know if you don't come forward with the fact you have a conviction, the state will come after you for something under document falsification. -
Walmart guy "resusitation"? (Vid inside!!!)
Richard B the EMT replied to vs-eh?'s topic in Patient Care
I don't know if the Nassau County PD LEOs are trained to any level of First Aid, either CFR, or EMT level. They use civilian Paramedics, in a different uniform, and take over driving duties from that paramedic when the ambulance, driven by the paramedic, arrives on the scene. Due to the time element involved, I kind of doubt that either the Valley Stream VFD/VAS, or Elmont VFD/VAS, close neighbors to that Wal-Mart, would have arrived on the scene. The person seen with the stethoscope might have been from one of the NCPD 5th precinct ambulances, but as the picture is blurry, I cannot state with any certainty if he is or not. (I mention that the Valley Stream VFD/VAS is either the largest department by members, in Nassau County, or has the most "houses" in the county. At least one of their members was an EMT formerly in my VAS. He was not in the camera-phone video, because I'd have recognized him.) -
The only "Drop-Down" bag we use, if I understand your definition, is the one holding the gas mask we are assigned by the FDNY EMS Command. It can be carried as a small side bag, clipped to the belt, or the belt and around the leg. My main complaint with them is, on some of the older ambulances we use, the bag blocks easy access to the door handle, so you have to struggle opening the door to get out of the ambulance. That is why I usually use a "speed klip" to just fasten the bag to my "utility belt, and clip it back on while exiting the vehicle, and removing it on return to the ambulance cab.

Example of why we do NOT speed in ambulances...
Richard B the EMT replied to akflightmedic's topic in General EMS Discussion
I reference information I have posted in other strings, that my employer, the FDNY, has written policy that no department vehicle is authorized to go more than 10 miles above posted speed on any street, even if running L&S, and at no time are they allowed over 50 MPH, in NYC, where the maximum speed limit on any roadway, highway, turnpike, and parkway is only 50 MPH, anyway. I am aware that some states heavily enforce speed laws, even one mile over the posted speed can and will earn a driver a ticket. Others are more lenient, you need to be at least 15 MPH before the troopers "notice" you. DWI, which can be read as Driving While Intoxicated, or Impaired (allowing for ticketing drivers on some legitimate prescription medications, or even when too tired), is under attempt to be enforced by all the LEOs working traffic detail. There's more DWI drivers than LEOs, or so it seems at times. Now, not knowing local or state laws for the location of involvement in the accident, what does their local state law(s) say about ambulances: 1) traveling faster than posted speeds, 2) traveling faster than posted speeds with a patient on board, 3) traveling faster than posted speeds with a patient on board without the L&S engaged, 4) traveling faster than posted speeds with a patient on board with the L&S engaged, 5) company or departmental "understood" policies on when and if L&S needs to be engaged with patients on board (probably specified by call type classifications) which are not written down, 6) company or departmental written policies on when and if L&S needs to be engaged with patients on board (specified by call type classifications in their operations guide books), 7) company or department "understood" versus "written" policies on when speed limits may be exceeded, and by how much if so allowed. Company/Department policies, written or otherwise, may unknowingly be in opposition to area laws. I know of some private, non 9-1-1 ambulance providers, who run L&S to all calls (until one of their ambulances is involved in a crash with fatalities, which seems to happen every few years as new ambulance service providers surface). At JFK International Airport, which is under the coverage of the dual-state agency of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police, just running the lights on the roadways outside the terminals can earn one a ticket (inside the relative security area of runways, taxiways, and internal drives is different, they will escort you, and you must have the lights on, that taxiing aircraft will be aware of your presence seeing the lights. ). -
Diligent police work, or a horrifying witch hunt?
Richard B the EMT replied to DwayneEMTP's topic in Archives
There are certain crimes that are canceled by the Statutes of Limitations. Sexually related crimes seem to be one of them, murder is not. How else could TV shows like "Cold Case" have material, solving murders from 1945, by surviving folks now in their 80s? Obviously, I don't know anything other than what I have read here on the case under discussion in this string. However, how many times have we read or heard of real cases where someone had been jailed for years, until a new trial found the truth, the "convict" released, and in the press conference on the release, said wording to the effect of, "Where do I go to get my good name restored, and get the years behind bars back as the good law abiding citizen I was then, and am now?" -
I currently work in the "Triage" room at FDNY Bureau of Health Services, so I am potentially taking over 100 BPs a day, with some coming back to see if they have been able to lower their readings. I have always taken BPs, even in the field, in numbers divisible by 2, due to the already stated fact that non digital, aneroid BP units are with lines indicating by 2s. Are we wrong, or are the machines we use making us wrong? I don't think we are wrong at all, and until we get dial style machines that have odd numbers in addition to even, I will continue with even only readings.

I was just looking at some stuff on Youtube, and found a Phil Ochs song that kind of describes the situation of those asked to leave complaining of how long they had been waiting to get in. The song is "Outside of a Small Circle of Friends". Listen to the words, and see if you agree with me.

As for me, I am, except for clothing that needs to fit, going to do all future shopping online!

As reported on local news radio and TV reports, with this wording from AOL News. We in the US call the Friday after Thanksgiving Holiday "Black Friday" as most retail stores sell so much stuff on this one day, as to take them out of the financially troubling "red" into the profitable "black". ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wal-Mart Worker Trampled to Death By COLLEEN LONG, AP NEW YORK (Nov. 28) - A Wal-Mart worker was killed Friday after an "out of control" throng of shoppers eager for post-Thanksgiving bargains broke down the doors at a suburban store and knocked him to the ground, police said. At least four other people, including a woman eight months pregnant, were taken to hospitals for observation or minor injuries, and the store in Valley Stream on Long Island was closed for several hours. It reopened shortly after 1 p.m. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. in Bentonville, Ark., called the incident a "tragic situation" and said the employee came from a temporary agency and was doing maintenance work at the store. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Richard B, again. According to the Nassau County (Long Island, New York) PD, in whose 5th Precinct the incident happened, several of their LEOs who attempted to aid the trampled down man were themselves almost trampled. They are also reviewing the store's security tapes, and are talking about pressing charges, minimally, "Criminal Trespass", as the blitzkrieg shoppers were in the store before it actually opened, after breaking down a gated metal door to gain access. I usually joke about early shoppers who go to holiday early openings as being "Door Busters", as so named by the stores themselves for the sales. These idiots took the name to heart. I am now in disagreement with my momma B, who said to me "Just to get the people to stop, they should have fired their sidearms into the ceiling to get their attention". I disagree, positing that had the LEOs fired their weapons, there would have been a stampede away from the guns, causing a pileup where those running from the weapons would collide with others still trying to access their way into the store. Would any of our city members who are themselves LEOs care to comment on mom and my disagreement, and any other commentary from anyone on this incident?

One of the charities "searching for the cure" that I support is CF. I don't know it to be racially specific, but it does affect children, as witness their plea of a female child mispronouncing it as "Fifty Six Roses". "Such a beautiful name for so ugly and insidious a disease".

Activated Charcoal Use In The Field
Richard B the EMT replied to crotchitymedic1986's topic in General EMS Discussion
Beaten in by crotchitymedic1986 with the best question! I'll get mine in on another day. -
I'm going to amend what AnthonyM83 wrote, by saying when the so called 4 questions are asked, that they be phrased as really requiring an answer. If you ask a question that can be answered as a "Yes" or "No", they may answer "Yes" automatically. Human nature, I think. Examples: "Can you please tell me the day of the week?" (bad) "Tell me, please, what is the the day of the week?" (much better)

Cadaver, Anatomy, Procedure Lab for EMS Dec 3 and 4
Richard B the EMT replied to Doczilla's topic in Education and Training
I ask a favor of the attendees, as unofficial representative of those who are not able to attend, the following: Don't forget to bring information back to the EMT City Web site, and post it here, that the rest of us may partake of what sounds like will be a bunch of good information. -
Would you ALS or BLS this patient and why?
Richard B the EMT replied to Arizonaffcep's topic in General EMS Discussion
Perhaps I am playing with semantics, or using different titles for similar employment in countries other than my own, but where I come from, the Paramedics ARE the ALS side of the EMS world. Me and the other EMTs are the BLS. -
As one who is old enough to have been the crew on "Caddylances", I have to comment that even the "caddylances", depending on the roadway and chauffer, could still give a bumpy ride. They did smooth it out a lot, but I don't think any ground vehicle, then or now is totally smooth ride capable. Some come close.

An unnatural being? We talking about some kind of weirdo person, some kind of demon, or some unknown life form that came through the Stargate? At least you know you caught my attention, and probably other Sci-Fi fans on the site. Keep us posted.

Activated Charcoal Use In The Field
Richard B the EMT replied to crotchitymedic1986's topic in General EMS Discussion
When I started in 1973, we were required to carry both activated charcoal, to slow or stop the poison absorption, and Ipecac, to induce vomiting. The standing instruction was, never use both at the same time, as one's effects would be countered by the effects of the other. I have never used either, and my local protocols no longer allow carrying Ipecac. -
OK, I still cannot figure out how to post the movie, but the link I prefer for the season is as follows... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPaGQEskSKM
