  1. If you drive, leave him at the hospital. If and when he asks why, tell him it was either that, or being arrested for killing the son-of-a-b!, Then tell him why!
  2. Go the other direction... "Up On The Roof" by numerous artists. (PS: "I Sing The Songs" "Under the Boardwalk" while "Standing On The Corner, Watching All The Girls Go By" "Up On The Roof", while "Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay"!)
  3. I can only hope, as none of us in EMT City were there (or was someone there?), that they asked the patient of they were having any blurred vision, headaches, or tingling in the extremities. If yes, good reason for full spinal immobilization, even if it turns out that it wasn't needed. Are the schools still teaching "Over-treat"? It's always better to overdo things and not have needed it, than under-treat and cause harm by the lack of treatment.
  4. I wanted a New York team: the Giants are in New Rutherford (the Meadowlands), New Jersey. Then, again, I haven't really followed football from when Joe Willie Namath was still throwing quarterback, wearing pantyhose, and man styled mink coats, with the Shea Stadium Jets, back in 1969!
  5. Before MAST was removed from protocol, the contraindication was a puncture wound to the chest, impaled object (don't inflate section where object is impaled), pregnancy (don't inflate the abdomen section).
  6. Even with not putting the patient into a KED, a KODE, an IDEA, or whatever brand of vest-style immobilizer device your service used, the crew shown should have still positioned the gurney and long spine board as near as possible to the patient, including putting one end of the board as a bridge between the car seat and the gurney, tilting while supporting the patient's head, neck and spine in as near to a straight line as possible to lay the patient onto the board, and slide the patient onto the board. I have commented on quick availability of getting additional help, as, yes, I am urban (can one get more urban than New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, Ottawa, Perth, London, Paris, Stuttgart, Gotham City, or Metropolis?), but I have used bystanders quite often. A simple request to the crowd to have someone come over and just "brace this thing so it don't move while I do this" is usually sufficient to get help. As this was on an apparently well traveled road, in decent weather (no rain or snow showing) during daylight, such bystander assist could have been readily available from cars stopped due to the original accident. I also admit this source of additional aid is not always available, even in high density populated areas, due to the time of day or night, inclement weather, or indifferent folks with a "that's your job, not mine" attitude.
  7. As a part of your research, may I suggest "The Magic Of 3 AM", by Jim Paige? (or is that Page?) He was the technical adviser to the "Emergency!" show, and the founding editor of JEMS.
  8. "You walked out of my dreams, and into my arms. Now you're my angel devine" (From "You're 16, You're Beautiful, and You're Mine" as sung by then Beatles member Ringo Starr, and probably others) Dream a Little Dream of Me, Rosemarie (unk artists) Dream Lover (unk artists) JakeEMT: I think Sharri Lewis, the late ventriloquist, and her "friends" LambChop and Charlie Horse, did the "Song That Never Ends" in the late 1950s, before the first appearance of Jim Henson's Muppets on the Ed Sullivan Show in the mid to late 1960s, and definately before either Sesame Street or the Muppets Show. Sharri died in the mid 1990s. Spenac: You do know, while Manilow sang "I Write The Songs", he didn't write THAT song? Incredible, but True!
  9. Ladies and Gentlemen, can I make a request that probably has no real bearing on the topic at hand? Please, even if you are using an abbreviation or acronym of common practice for your area, spell it out at least once in your posting, so those who do not use that abbreviation will be able to follow along. I had to go thru several postings before I found out SJA was Saint Johns Ambulance. I even spell out Fire Department New York Emergency Medical Service Command, when speaking of my employers, the FDNY EMSC. Yes, I will ask the administrator to put it as a suggestion for the new folks signing up, and posting for the first time. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.
  10. Was this call in an Urban, Sub-Urban, Boondocks, Farming country, or the middle of Nowhere setting? I am urban, and am perhaps spoiled, that I can get a lot of help, EMS wise, Police wise, Fire and Fire-Rescue wise, in a short time. Plus, ain't nowhere in town more than 15 minutes from an ED, and usually no more than 35 from a Trauma Center. Medevacs are already handled in a different posting.
  11. Julie, Julie, Julie, Do You Love Me? (I think, but am probably wrong, Bobby Goldsboro) Do You Love Me? ("Tevye" and "Goldie", from "Fiddler On the Roof")
  12. JPINFV states Tell that to Lenny Bruce and Redd Foxx!
  13. 1) I had never seen or heard of this device prior to EMT City. 2) Confirm, please: This monster was used by nasal insertion? 3) I can understand the usage of the face guard portion of a football helmet to secure this ...this...THING!
  14. Just mentioning that NYC HHC EMS, and now the FDNY EMS, have been using type ones for years, but I never saw them do any remounts. They seem to just sell the intact modular, usually 5 to 7 years old, to out of town companies, squads. corps, and departments, at savings to the purchaser. Due to the roadway abuse of both Police and EMS vehicles, and I assure you the abuse is not (usually) intentional, I would not recommend a used one from the NYC area. However, due to the attention paid to Engine and Ladder companies, I would recommend those for purchase. While I was not told where it was being used, I heard there's an Engine company in use somewhere in the Midwest, formerly used by the FDNY, still in use after 30 model years of service.
  15. Last night's "NCIS" (Feb. 5, 2008) had "Ducky" mention this condition as a part of an autopsy of a Eubonic Plague-like condition exhibiting corpse discovered on board a ship. Coincidence?
  16. Perhaps not the exact wording, but NY State Good Sam laws say to effect, if a person attempts to render aid without expectation of financial renumeration, without attempting harm, or withholding treatment as a trained individual, they are covered by Good Sam. If they do it for pay, they are covered by NYS Public Health Law, Article 30. Either way, it is "Protection" if the individual gets sued, neither offers 'Immunity" from being sued.
  17. I think I found the better field testing person for the tampon insertion. "Paging Dr. Dover. Dr. Ben Dover"
  18. I usually don't drink, period, but I am going to have some weird thoughts the next time I see a beer bong at a party!
  19. Confirm, please. I always thought that was "Well Dressed Man"
  20. Try the KISS principal: Keep It Simple, Stupid! "Bringing in a (Nature of Call), (Age sex VS if available), ETA. (If requested, MOI)".
  21. JPINFV 's link brings back memories of a long string of discussion of this very case. I think we went 10 pages, minimum. Not the way to "Ride The Lightning".
  22. How many who dispatch, report, while on a notification to the ED, saying "Cardiac arrest, CPR in progress (age sex ETA)" and the "charge nurse" on the telephone insists on an answer to "What's the BP, pulse rate, and respirations?"
  23. I've served Jury Duty several times, and the only time I was actually empaneled was Grand Jury, 4 weeks worth. I got paid for all times I was there. As the EMS is a large agency, they can, and do, claim the jury payment back, as I am actually being paid by the department for that time in Jury Duty. (I get my regular wages from the department, and reimburse them for the jury duty, minus a pre-set "travel costs" payment.) Nowadays, they have a "telephone standby" system. They issue you an ID number, and you call a toll free line. If your number is in the batch, say, "J100100 to J100300" and your number is "J100155", the tape will tell you which courthouse you're to report to, and at what time. There are at least 3 court houses in Queens County, where I go, as a Queens, NY resident. They let you know at least 3 weeks in advance when you go onto "standby", and now, there are no employment exemptions, like being a teacher, a LEO, or a Volley fire fighter or Volley EMT/Paramedic. They actually took the Mayor of NYC for a jury (he served!) right after the rules got changed. If you are self employed, have child or elder care issues, or no longer live in the county (with proof) those MIGHT be the only exemptions, on a case by case basis.
  24. JPINFV wrote Boston, or Massachusetts, doesn't pay jurors? Here in NYC, NY, we get paid, and thank you for the reminder: I haven't gotten my check from the Court Clerk for my services rendered 3 months ago. I AM supposed to be paid.
  25. ANOTHER remake, original by Hank Williams (Senior)
