Are some rescues just not worth it?
Richard B the EMT replied to Just Plain Ruff's topic in General EMS Discussion
Wendy: From what I remember, all these years later following Bible Studies, God gave us all Free Will, meaning we can follow God's teachings, or not, as taught us by followers of Moses, Jesus, Mohammed, and for lack of proper terms or names, the "Spokesmen and Women" of other religions. No offence intended, I just lack that knowledge of names and reference terms. -

I was SO sure that Hurricane/Tropical Storm/Tropical Depression Lee was going to throw some serious water onto the Great State of Texas, relieving the drought, let alone drowning some of the fires. I truely am sorry I was incorrect.

Youze guyz should Google one Alice B. Toklas. She is apparently the creator of the marijuana brownie, dating back several decades. One Google'd link... http://www.nndb.com/people/741/000115396/ Oops, while Alice is the writer of the book, someone else supplied the recipe, per the link.

As a BLS provider, cushion the head against injury during Tonic/Clonic, immobilize to best of ability and protocols, and transport to Trauma Center. -

As a clarification, especially for the new folks to this site, I'm an EMT-B, providing BLS. -

If the OP IS still around, I just reread the entire string, forgetting I had already posted in it. If you want to explain to the interviewers why you want to become a member of the EMS conmunity, explain thusly: "They helped me at a time of my need, saving my life. I got, now I want to give back." -
Don't quite know about that. A local Chinese food chain of 4 stores in my county (Queens County, NY, with the branches in Belle Harbor, Howard Beach, Ozone Park, and Rego Park) is owned by a white dude.

Quick commentaries: 1) Someone is here from Israel. Do not Israeli EMS units have On Line Medical Control, even under a different name, say, "Medical Director"? Someone to ask, in effect, "Mommy/Daddy, May I?" within the agency? 2) Oxygen is a prescription item in NY, but usually, nobody cries "Foul" if given by a (CERTIFIED) First Responder, EMT or Paramedic, following protocols, as they are, again, usually, minimally under the licence of the service's Medical Director. 3) Protocols I work under, which may be different where (collectively) YOU work, state to the effect of "even if it is the same med, issued by the same doctor, on the same day, to both spouses (or domestic partners) from the same pharmacy, you cannot give the medicines of one person to another person, or suffer the consequences of the authorities". -
Are some rescues just not worth it?
Richard B the EMT replied to Just Plain Ruff's topic in General EMS Discussion
Just because someone is of any particular religion, or of no religion of any kind, does not make them smarter, dumber, stronger, weaker, kinder, or meaner, than anyone else of that group. I feel the same thing goes for males and females, too. Then, some take parts of their existing religion, and change it to a "new and improved" religion, claiming a different interpretation of what had been taught of and from that religion, and claiming that any not practicing their new "brand" should be put to death, even those practicing the more traditional version of that religion. Can you say "Taliban"? At the same time, a recently founded (as within roughly the last 60 years) religion was formed around the writings of a now deceased Science Fiction writer, by the name of L. Ron Hubbard. Due to my complete lack of knowledge on Dianetics, that is all I will say about them. Due to the actions of a few, nobody should condemn an entire group. -
Words fail me. Condolences.

At minimum, that was...interesting.

I think Sven and Ole are in the offices next to Senator Blutarsky, formerly of the Delta (Animal) House Fraternaty.

NJ EMT dies in water rescue
Richard B the EMT replied to snoopy911's topic in General EMS Discussion
I think that, in most jurisdictions, when there is a vehicle into the water, the way to determine "confirmation" the vehicle being occupied or not is going to remain entering the water for a look-see. As someone might have attempted a murder/suicide, then change their mind on the suicide, not reporting someone still in the vehicle, the local FD or the LEOs still have to check it out. I suspect that this was the circumstance of the rescuers being in the water in the first place. -
Before the EMS/FDNY Merger, we had at least 2 Chiefs of EMS who were black. I personally worked for several, lower level black chiefs, and, as with the white ones, considered them to either be smart, dumb, easy to communicate with, or needing work on their "People to People" skills. Same for the Asian and Hispanic chiefs, captains, and lieutenants. Addendum: Same for my Paramedic associates, as well as my fellow and sister EMTs.

Just this summer, wasn't there a case where a California FD let a suicidal man drown, only to see a civilian pull the deceased from the ocean? AFTER this incident, the department supposedly then got basic rescue swimming instructions? -

I thought vaso-vagal syncope usually was incurred on defication, not urination? Admitting never had, knowingly, any vaso-vagal syncope patients, although the common "ol' paramedic's story" is most cardiac calls between 4 and 9 AM are found in the bathroom... Ace the tests, pal! -

My condolences to the Kenwood family, and the extended family of his department. -
90 year old drug seekers? Reminds me of an alleged Navy Aviation line, "There's old pilots, and bold pilots, but no old, bold pilots".

I'll probably kick myself, but what is a Kestral? Oops, Kestrel.

Welcome aboard, from one who started in a Volunteer Ambulance in 1973! Simply stated, some of us ain't been puppies in a while.

Quakefire, while a box a six footer can stand in is nice, some areas need to keep the total vehicle hight down. Otherwise, you risk some roof damage going under highway overpasses. FDNY EMS ambulances stand no more than 9 foot tall, and 9 foot wide. There is an underpass near the FDNY EMS station in Astoria, going under the Triboro/Robert F. Kennedy Bridge. One sign says 9 foot 6 inch clearance, but next to it, another one saying 8 foot six inch. As nobody wants to commit to which is correct, NO ambulances from Astoria station are allowed to attempt that underpass.

Re David Koresh (spelling?): Did any authority ever go public as to what, or possibly who, started the fires? One version was that the Davidians started the fires, just coinciding with the tanks pushing the teargas into the buildings. Teargas is flamible (spelling, sorry, spellcheck still down) which most folks don't recall. -
My home communities of the Rockaways were ordered manditory evac, must be out by 5 PM today. Me, Momma B, Lady J and her brother are currently encamped at my aunt's house near the 1964-65 Worlds Fair Grounds, left yesterday late afternoon.
