  1. Were you the student? Just asking, as we all were at some point, and all have had to endure their first DOA.
  2. I DO have a way of stating the obvious, don't I? I'm working on that failing.
  3. As was stated in a different post, complain about "discounts', and they have a habit of departing, never to be seen again. The last food discount I got was at the rest stops on the New York Thruway, for about the first month after 9-11-01, in the form of free French Fries and sodas. For other activities, earlier this month, the "USS Intrepid Air, Sea, and Space Museum" held it's 5th regular "Fire and EMS" weekend, free entry for members of an FD or EMS provider, and their families, at half price, up to 4 additional people. I went with my "Lady J", who is my longtime girlfriend, and saw a bunch of FD and EMS members from all over the New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut "Tri-state area" For the uninformed, USS Intrepid is a decommissioned World War 2 built Aircraft Carrier. She saw service in that war, survived Kamikaze attack, further saw service in Korea and Vietnam, and also retrieved several NASA manned spacecraft on return from orbit. She, the dock at which she is secured, and other vessels, aircraft, and soon the Space Shuttle Enterprise, are now a museum
  4. A supervisor saw I was "losing it", while working, on my day off, and having responded from my home roughly a half mile away from the scene of the crash of American Airlines Flight 587, November 12, 2001, Newport Avenue and Beach 131st Street, Belle Harbor section of Queens County, NYC, NY. We lost all 260 souls from the aircraft, and another 5 on the ground. The supervisor put me on a different detail on the scene, a distance away from where the body bags were being loaded for transport to the temporary morgue. This was on top of the strain everyone in NYC was still under, from the attack on, and the collapse of, the World Trade Center, only 2 months prior.
  5. Given enough time, every 9-1-1 EMS providing company ends up taking care of a pet, a service animal, a LEO dog, and reportedly, and unconfirmed, at least one police horse, who "signed" the "Refused Medical Assistance" portion of the call report by stamping on it with it's horseshoe clad hoof. No, the police horse wasn't my assignment.
  6. Aha! There are a number of us use DNR to mean that, due to an advanced directive, or following certain protocols on "obvious death", we make no effort at all to resuscitate. If the order to terminate efforts at resuscitation is issued by On Line Medical Control, every agency has their own wording.
  7. Let me rephrase my last posting. If the shoe needs "breaking in", it is not the shoe getting used to the wearer, it is, instead, the foot, possibly painfully, getting used to the boot.
  8. I just realized something. Where is Crotch, and why has he not commented in this string? I presume this string to be right up his alley.
  9. I have heard it said, that a man curses to avoid crying, and a woman cries to avoid cursing. Don't know of the veracity of that, because I have been known to do both, simultaneously.
  10. I don't know if it is still there, but a few years ago, there was a feature on the Coney Island USA (Brooklyn, NY boardwalk, called "Shoot Da Freak". Basically, it consisted of firing a paint ball gun at a probably underpaid senior teenager wearing combat camo clothing, and a protective face mask, running back and forth between protective barriers, while taunting the customers
  11. Someone inferred to what I know as the New England motto, which supports the posit that in the thin population areas, they think self sufficient:
  12. Factory rejects can be good. They do the rejects because a seam they determine needs 17 stiches has 16 or 18. There's a lot of companies would be out of business if they didn't have large assortments of factory rejects to sell, at reduced prices. Don't worry, even with the rejects, the manufacturers still make money.
  13. While the type calls probably end up being roughly the same types, in urban areas, you've got larger populations in concentration. Figure "X" number of calls for injury or illness per "Y" number of people. A community of 20,000 will have less calls than with the 8,000,000+ people here in NYC, where, due to the seasonal hot weather, a few days ago, we did almost 5,000 calls in one 24 hour period. Let me simplify: The higher the concentration of population, the more likely it becomes that someone is going to need an ambulance for something.
  14. Get catalogs from companies that sell camping gear. Some of the bags I see there can be used as a "first in" bag. One of my first kits I set up for myself was in a knapsack, before I earned enough to buy a "professional" bag.
  15. I might have mentioned this on other strings, but it bears repeating: For any footwear, the shoe or boot needs to fit you. You shouldn't fit the shoe or boot. Someone brought this up on this string, already. Nobody wants to be made grumpy, because someone else is grumpy from uncomfortable boots. Grumpiness may be almost as contageous as yawning.
  16. You're just jealous that the voices DON'T talk to YOU! lol
  17. Peninsula Hospital Center, Far Rockaway (Queens County, NYC, NY) is apparently going to be closed. It is one of 2 hospitals on the Rockaway Peninsula, in an area of roughly 100,000 people over an 11 mile by 1 mile at the widest point stretch. We seem to be in a situation, exclusive of the financial one, where 2 hospitals is usually not enough for either, but too much for one. This falls in my usual comment that MOST calls are roughly 15 minutes from an ER, but the next nearest hospitals to Peninsula (exclusive of St. John's Episcopal, 5 minutes from PHC), are easily a half hour travel time. PHC has a heli-pad on the grounds, St. John's does not. Also to be taken into account, the Rockaway Peninsula communities are only accessible by 3 bridges, one into "inland" Queens County, one into Brooklyn (Kings County), and the 3rd into Atlantic Beach, Nassau County, and only 2 other heavily traveled "main" roadways, which jam up during normal rush hours. All the roadways, and the bridge connecting roadways, have been known to flood out during lunar flood tides, especially during storms (all our coastal evacuation routes are subject to this flooding, unfortunately). If all calls go to St. John's, ER turnaround times are going to increase drastically, and locally assigned ambulances are subject to temporary redeployment when inland, or in Brooklyn. Currently, the area has 4 FDNY BLS and 2 ALS ambulances, 5 VFD BLS ambulances, and possibly an upcoming VAC unit. Please read the article link, then comment here. Thanks. http://www.queenscou...0d578026783.txt Forgot to mention, St John's also gets patients in from nearby Nassau County, as they are situated a bit more than a mile from the Nassau County border. Nassau County PD and community VFD ambulances will also be affected in the turnaround times. Also, IFT services bring in patients, too.

  19. Anyone low enough to do that better have the bedpan engraved with the Nurse's name, and the pan gold-plated.
  20. i never knew the 9-1-1 system tied into the Ghostbusters' hotline. Just mentioning I used to date a Navajo "Spiritual Medium", who, at the time, due to black market adoption, didn't yet know she was Navajo.
  21. 1) Paramedics and EMTs do a lot of improvization, and still remain in protocols. The "mantra" remains "Improvise, Adapt, Overcome!" 2) Damn Right We Are!
  22. Who just muttered "Lock and Load"? I didn't recognize the voice. LOL
  23. As always in the assorted strings on this site, it gives one pause to think. It also just caused me to Google "menarche", and after 37 years on the job, I now have heard the word for the first time, and also now know what it means.
  24. I question if any black folks object if and when Chris Rock uses the infamous "N" word, or Jewish folks complain in how Jackie Mason depicts Jews? (For those from outside the US who don't know, Rock is Black, and Mason is not only Jewish, but an ordained Rabbi)Both perform self deprecatory humor, directed at themselves, and their respective backgrounds.
  25. I believe you and I have been to this dance before. Would you agree with my position that 9-1-1 is a victim of it's own success?
