My girlfriend, despite her small size (5 foot 3, claims she weighs 105 pounds, but I suspect less) can lift better than some women of larger size. I had also worked with one woman who couldn't lift to save her own life, whom I commented on, in a different string some time back. 2 women together? If they can handle the job when not together, I see nothing wrong. Lawsuit? I admit I am undecided. Momma B just looked over my shoulder, and asked if they would make such a fuss for 2 small men?

Amen to that!

First up, welcome back! Second, as I am uninformed as to what happened, when you are ready and up to it, tell us what happened. Third and final for this posting, feel better soon!

I think I was having deja vu all over again.

NREMT and EMT Certificate confusion (California)

Clarification, please: Was that EMT I(ntermediate), or EMT One(1)? -
Such has happened before, at different locations. Last month, at the 100th Precinct Community Council meeting, "Cop Of The Month" awards were made to 2 NYPD officers, who responded to a man shot, a short distance from the local shopping area, who also claimed to be victim of a drive-by. Something triggered the LEOs' "Spidey Sense", and on further investigation, discovered the man had shot himself. When they searched his apartment, a block away, they arrested the "victim" for possession of an Uzi Automatic weapon, and for child endangerment, as there was a 5 year old in the apartment with the hidden but unsecured weapon, as well.

Given the limited "facts", NYPD would most likely "dual agency" (NYPD/FDNY EMS) respond to the "Injury" call.

What was your account name?

$10 says someone out there has had a call like this:

Don't know about that, but I did, one tour, transport 2 to the Psych ER, separately, where both claimed to be Jesus of Nazareth. Both eventually had to be restrained by hospital police, when they ended up arguing, with blows exchanged before they could be separated, as to which was the "real" one. -
How Many EMT's does your department have

I will just use reference to my EMS station, but there's a bunch more stations around NYC to consider into any equation here. We run 2 person crews on each ambulance per 8 hour tour, with another crew member per tour on days off. That is 9 persons assigned per each ambulance. Make that 36 total EMTs at my station, for the 4 BLS ambulances, with an additional 9 for the Paramedic ALS ambulance, and 9 specially trained Paramedics for the Haz-Tac ALS ambulance. Currently, we have no BLS or ALS "Rescue" ambulances assigned, but one can be relocated from other stations as the need arises. Seasonally, we'll add an additional BLS ambulance, crewed by either assigned or voluntary overtime personnel, but this unit is usually only 2 tours, day and evening. If we have an expected severe weather condition, like a blizzard, or hurricane, using involuntary overtime personnel, we'll activate an additional BLS ambulance. The station has 1 Captain, who varies which tour (s)he works each month, to interact with all personnel assigned the station. We have 6 lieutenants minimum assigned the "Conditions" car, with one Lt. in the vehicle and the other at the station per tour, or a single Lt., splitting their time between field supervision and office duties. They also run 8 hour tours. Just as a reference, and usually not under direct NYC 9-1-1 control, we have 1 volunteer ambulance corps available part time, with a potential of 2 additional BLS ambulances,3 Hatzoloh Chevra Volunteer ambulances (religious ambulances, google them for better details), and 3 of the 4 volunteer fire departments within the Station's normal Primary Area of Response have a total of 6 additional ambulances. Due to needs within the communities, 4 of the 6 are 4 wheel drive, for driving through unpaved sand beaches. -
Due to my current knowledge of "Hands On", even from an EMS viewpoint, I don't believe in "On-Line" classes for either EMS or Fire, until one is already completed a "classroom didactic and 'lab'" class. Both FDNY and FDNY EMS have some "in house" "on line" mandatory classes, but most of that is for refresher or updates, and it is INTRAnet, not INTERnet. Also, EMTs, Paramedics, and Fire Fighters in FDNY have to return to the Academy for regularly scheduled classes. Don't take the class, and one risks suspension

I next expect to be in Albany (actually the Holiday Inn "Turf" on Wolf Road, in Colony) in September, for the "Pulse Check" Convention of the NY State Volunteer Ambulance and Rescue Association.

Careful, 2c4, you won't just be offending Irish Americans, but anyone who has heritage from Ireland. I also note that anywhere a group becomes the newest immigrants, or, during wartime, a conquered people, as a show of power, real or imagined, they are going to be subject to put downs. Regrettably, it seems to be human nature. I also note, per some association with language studies (self guided), that whatever a group calls itself, it usually translates to "The People", or "Our People". Already, the group is attempting exclusion of those from other areas, languages, skin coloration, religions, what have you. -
I just realized that I misspoke. The actual order in New York State is: A) Direct pressure to the site, If possible, elevate the site to above the heart, C) Pressure Point, D) Tourniquet.

New York State protocol, at both BLS and ALS level. Also, as where I have been working, the NYC metyropolitan area, I have the advantage of usually being no more than 15 minutes from an ER, and 30 from a Trauma Center, so I know how to apply one, but never, in 37 years, have had to apply one.

One New York Stater to another:Welcome! I'm in the Belle Harbor section of the Rockaway Peninsula area of Queens County, NYC. Where are you at?

You know I deal with "First Responder-Defibrillator" trained fire fighters. When I arrive on the scene where they've started patient care, before I ask for their report, I tell them I am still obligated to do my own survey. When I get their report, and do my survey, if I find as they did, I tell them they got it right, otherwise, I tell them, gently, what they did wrong, what to do next time, but still stress what they did right. Timmy, what these Paramedics initially did is sometimes referred to as "Paramedic Shove". I have heard reports from many associates over the years, sometimes it is actually a physical shove, but it boils down to "Get out of my way, I'm here to save the day! If you are not a Medic like me, you don't exist in my planet." However, if they removed your splinting, and manipulated the injury site, at least by New York State DoH standards, they committed a malfeasance malpractice. I trust you follow my other mantra, "document, Document, DOCUMENT!" If these Paramedics are within the same service provider as you, go to your medical director with what you've mentioned here, if they are not, have the medical director from your service make formal complaint to their medical director, with documentation to the appropriate medical licensing/certification agency. As to their rudeness, unfortunately, nobody yet has found a cure for being stupid.

A different type of discrimination, and it ain't just one skin color affected... Adoption of Google Apps Program Discriminates Against the Blind National Federation of the Blind Asks Department of Justice to Investigate Schools Across the Country</I> Baltimore, Maryland (March 15, 2011): The National Federation of the Blind (NFB), the oldest and largest nationwide organization of blind people in the United States, today requested that the United States Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, investigate civil rights violations committed by New York University (NYU) and Northwestern University against blind faculty and students. The NFB made the request because the schools have adopted technology that is not accessible to the blind. Both universities have recently adopted Google Apps for Education as a means of providing e-mail and collaboration tools to students and faculty. Google Apps for Education is a free suite of hosted communication and collaboration applications that includes Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Talk, Google Docs, and Google Sites. Each of these applications contains significant accessibility barriers for blind people utilizing screen access technology, which converts what is on the computer screen into synthesized speech or Braille. A similar request for investigation has been filed against four Oregon public school districts that are using Google Apps. The complaints allege violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. For further illustration of this matter, please view a demonstration of screen access technology used by the blind and the accessibility barriers that a blind person experiences using Google Apps. Dr. Marc Maurer, President of the National Federation of the Blind, said: Given the many accessible options available, there is no good reason that these universities should choose a suite of applications, including critical e-mail services, that is inaccessible to blind students. Worse yet, according to recent data more than half of the American higher education institutions that are outsourcing e-mail to third-party vendors plan to deploy this suite, even though they know that it cannot be used by blind students. Nor can these universities claim ignorance of their legal obligations, since the United States Department of Justice and the United States Department of Education have specifically warned all university presidents against the adoption of inaccessible technology. The National Federation of the Blind will not tolerate this unconscionable discrimination against blind students and faculty and callous indifference to the right of blind students to receive an equal education. We urge these higher education institutions to suspend their adoption of Google Apps for Education until it is accessible to all students and faculty, not just the sighted, or to reject Google Apps entirely. The National Federation of the Blind is represented in this matter by Daniel F. Goldstein of the Baltimore firm Brown, Goldstein, and Levy. ### About the National Federation of the Blind With more than 50,000 members, the National Federation of the Blind is the largest and most influential membership organization of blind people in the United States. The NFB improves blind peoples lives through advocacy, education, research, technology, and programs encouraging independence and self-confidence. It is the leading force in the blindness field today and the voice of the nation's blind. In January 2004 the NFB opened the National Federation of the Blind Jernigan Institute, the first research and training center in the United States for the blind led by the blind. -

I concur that age discrimination is a huge possibility here. The unfortunate thing is going to be trying to prove it. CrazyDoctorBob, you mentioned you used to be in 2 different Volunteer Ambulance organizations in the NYC area. Which ones were they? PM me with the names if you wish to not reveal their names to the group.

If one is in a busy high call volume system, one learns to appreciate those "no hitter" tours, but I admit, for students, and adrenaline junkies, it sucks. Also, as payback is a beyotch, I note that the next tour after a no hitter I pulled, was wall to wall calls, running from minor cuts to 5 patients in a 2 car accident that all, due to MOI, need the Trauma Center.

That's only when being followed by a solitary animal that wishes to eat you. It doesn't work when it's a group out to beat you up for the crime of being there when they have nothing better to do (been THAT victim too damn many times in my youth).

So what was the final disposition of that dog handler stole the tramatically amputated leg for her to practive with her cadaver dog?

I have kind of a preference for combination clear face shield/M95 masks, but I don't have the choice at work. I use what the FDNY supplies, "safety goggles" and a separate M95 mask.
