HELP! Pressure points and bleeding control
Richard B the EMT replied to fakingpatience's topic in General EMS Discussion
The way I was taught, it was always "Direct Pressure", then add "Elevation", "Pressure Point", and then the "Tourniquet". Don't stop one, when you go to the next. As for Ice? Must be a local protocol, different than my local protocol. I don't say it's incorrect, I say, it's not the way I was taught. In my 'hood, it would be incorrect, but in yours, I'd be incorrect. So Be It! As for releasing direct pressure? Nope, don't do it, and the same for after applying the Tourniquet. Resumed blood flow to the point of bleeding would 'wash away" any clotting that might have occurred, defeating the action of the application of the direct pressure or Tourniquet -

When I first entered EMS work, I wanted to drive (still do). I was told I was too young (and at the time, at age 19, I probably was), and that I'd have to become an EMT. I had no clue what an EMT was. I have to wonder, in the future, will someone applying for Fire Fighter be told they have to become an EMT (or Paramedic) first, or to become an EMT or Paramedic, they have to first become a Fire Fighter? I started in a community based Volunteer Ambulance Corps. When I became municipal, I was in a Hospital based EMS, until, in a payback for votes (as I see it), the NYC Mayor manipulated the politics, and placed the EMS into becoming a Fire based service in 1996. When is it going to end, with my much joked about crossover trained municipal Office of Public Safety, where for a week, personnel are Fire Fighters, the next, EMS, the next, EMS, the next, Sanitation, the next, bus/train operators, the next, water and sewer installers...well, you get the drift.

Responding to a Nuclear Detonation
Richard B the EMT replied to Richard B the EMT's topic in General EMS Discussion
This bomb, due to size, is not going to be flying. It's going to be carried in a rolling duffel bag, or carried in a "Smart4Two" mini-car, the damn things are so small. As for your commentary, I've several times mentioned a scenario , and the response of a London "Bobby" that used to be in EMT City. The scenario was, on a November Thursday, at local 1517 hours, a 747 on the final approach to JFK is flying too low, and strikes the tallest local building, an apartment building at 71-15 Beach Channel Drive. The building is a 14 story tall structure, including the elevator stack and water tower. The building pancakes, and debris from both the aircraft and building land on the elevated train tracks of the "A" train. Just at that moment, an "A" train, bound for Mott Avenue in Far Rockaway, comes along. The driver puts the train into "Emergency", attempting to stop, but the momentum crashes the train into the debris field, and the last 3 cars of the 9 car train derail, and fall off the "El" tracks, onto 2 full buses transporting students home from the local Junior High/Middle School, that were passing under the "El" structure at that time. When asked what he'd do, the "Bobby" said he'd remove his uniform, and join the onlookers, that he might see what was going to happen next! -
Not to be a wet blanket, but verify that they can get such packages. There was a time that all packages were suspect to be carrying IEDs, and I don't know if they still have such alert in effect.

From AOL, and ABC Television network"s Good Morning America: As I see it, this person should be charged for his rescue.

From Homeland Security: Emergency Management and Response-Information Sharing and Analysis Center (EMR-ISAC): My reason for posting is a class I took 3 months ago, where they showed a 1960s Department of Defense tape of a military ordnance Atomic Warhead, that could be launched from a 70mm Recoilless Rifle. Herin is the video, from Youtube: When you realize how small a device can be made, like me, you should be frightened. Even if it is a Nuclear Dispersal Device, more commonly known as a "dirty bomb", the potential is horrific.

Mosque at Ground Zero is a "Slap in the Face"
Richard B the EMT replied to tniuqs's topic in Archives
The office building the clinic was in, is an old building, and the church seemed, in 1972, to be a fairly new construction. The clinic was, and possibly still is, renting the space in the building. I have no way of knowing which was there first. -
Bill Seeks To Have Denists Classified As Emergency Responders

LOL @ Kiwi. Good one! -
Quick Question: I know of the NREMT (National Registry of EMTs) and NAEMT (National Association of EMTs). I don't know NAEMS, of which I can only find a Northern Arizona EMS reference via Google. What is the reference here (EMT City) of NAEMS? If typo, let me know. Tnx.

I have had numerous experiences where, on bringing in another patient to the ER before a previous one had been admitted "upstairs", or when off duty and around the neighborhood, family and friends of patients approach and thank me for what I did for their family member or friend. Due to being an EMT for 37 years, I have to tell some of them I don't recall the specific call. Yet, when it is one I DO recall, it isn't a spectacular call, but mostly the ones where the patient was simply treated with respect, or simply that I held the patient's hand. Continuing better health for your dad, UG.

Bill Seeks To Have Denists Classified As Emergency Responders

I don't know about that, although it might be a good thing. I have to research if this was implemented, but there were rumblings a few years ago, that NYC 9-1-1 EMS responders wouldn't respond to addresses where a Doctor had an office, on presumption the doctor would provide medical assistance. Someone forgot to take into account that not all doctors are MDs or DOs, some might be dentists, or like my brother, a Doctor of Education (still has the title of Doctor, however). They also forgot that even (or especially) Medical Doctors have office hours, and might not be "in" when the upstairs neighbor starts having chest pain at 0217 hours. -

I recall a few years ago, some radicals bombed a floor of a building housing an abortion clinic in NYC. They handcuffed the real estate broker who was showing the floor to them to a radiator, and she only survived because their second bomb failed to go off. The site is across the street from a church and church based school, and the floor in question had been the site of my high school a few years earlier (really small school, BTW), at 2nd Avenue at East 23rd Street. -

Lady J is a Roman Catholic, and I am Jewish. We have attended services at each other's houses of worship for years. We go with Momma B sometimes, to a regional interfaith gathering, at other houses of worship. About the only ones we have not been to are Mosques, and I don't know what the name is for houses of worship of the Hindu and Sikh religions. -

As the government loves killing trees, ask if they have any instruction/information books that you could hand out to your teams. The worst they could say is "no".

I am posting a link, and only a link, to an article on Plagiarism by college students writing reports, from stuff found over the internet, without giving credit to whomever originally posted it. Spin off topic: What is right with America
Richard B the EMT replied to Just Plain Ruff's topic in Archives
In recent days, no less evident than in the verbal barrages between Congressmen Anthony Wiener, a Democrat, and Peter King, a Republican, over the failure of a bill for payment for medical expenses of responders to the World Trade Center. Both were in favor, but apparently with different viewpoints, as to the wording of said bill. -

The "View New Posts/Content" button had disappeared. It's back, so I shouldn't be having too much of a problem, now.
