  1. I'm guessing if the program allows 16 year olds, they aren't a NREMT state... Otherwise what would be the point??
  2. Untrue. There are plenty of volunteer departments who accept junior membership at the age of 16. Please don't give inaccurate information and dismiss this girls dreams because you assumed she would want a paid job at first.
  3. I will depend entirely on the program and their views on the issue. I know someone who started paramedic training 2 months before she turned 18, but it will be entirely up to the individual programs. Your best resource in this case would be to contact the program director and speak with them directly. Good luck.
  4. Welcome!
  5. You need your BSN to move up to a nurse practitioner which is an advanced practice degree...
  6. Welcome! I know a few members who lurk here and have a friend in the area I can ask. There is always free money out there if you look for it. I'm looking at the Pubic health Service and the USUHS to pay for my nurse practitioner degree.
  7. Yes. You really should live near Bethesda though and cost of living is very high.
  8. The USUHS also does public health placements, not just military. They pay ~$80k a year while in school as well.
  9. Congrats
  10. I'll take that job!
  11. I was always told to let patients know prescription steroids are like being on the worst PMS mood swings possible.
  12. Hepatic encephalopathy can cause a lot of behavioral changes
  13. Good for you for continuing your education. Since this is such a diverse group, your best resource in this case is to contact your state or NREMT and ask them. Best of luck!
  14. Correct the hypokalemia with some KCl, what do the rest of her labs look like? Agree with the above, id be hesitant to fully knock down her CNS though, but may be a good option until you get to the bigger hospital. I'd want neuro checks q15 and a repeat CBC, BMP, THS, T4,T3 to r/o myxedema coma as a ddx. What's her temp? Any edema? Myxedema coma can cause edema and relative hyponatremia/hypokalemia, and can cause GI paralysis which can cause malabsorption and decreased appetite. Either way, should be ruled out I think. Any recent ABG? Pretty sure this is a cardiac arrest secondary to electrolyte imbalance related to malnutrition. If you don't have access to any KCl, Lactated Ringers at least has potassium in it and will be more beneficial than NS. The hx of weakness can be from the hypomagnesemia and low phos which can cause high calcium levels as well.
  15. Also, Rescue Diver is required for Dive Master, which is a pre-requisite for Instructor... If you are just starting out with SCUBA, I hope you know, there are a lot of steps between Open Water and Instructor, and at least 100 dives...
  16. As a PADI DM, I would suggest looking into the PADI Emergency First Response Provider http://www.padi.com/scuba/padi-courses/diver-level-courses/view-all-padi-courses/emergency-first-response/default.aspx It provides more dive specific information. Having your Paramedic is great and I strongly suggest that as well, but some of the PADI courses will help in dive emergencies. There are a few members here from AUS who will be able to help you on how to go about obtaining your Paramedic card...
  17. Just drink some tequila and walk it off.
  18. So much for everyone coming for the reunion... Chat was EMPTY.
  19. Or self ambulate him to the captain's chair...wouldn't put it past him.
  20. If my comment about scopes of practice was wrong, then yah you could correct it, but there are a lot of states that just certify and if you read the link Mike posted from NREMT clarifying the differences between licensure and certification, it would also say similar things about scope of practice. You aren't the definitive voice.
