I have been thinking long and hard about what this post would be been tossing around a few ideals got a few ideals from a friend then when doing some searches to see if the topic was a problem. I came across an article that was very interesting and it really got my interest.

So here is ITK's 3000th post.

Do you think that a program like the one in the article would work in the community you live in and if not why. Would you be willing to try to establish a program like this to aid and help the community out? Do you see any possible downfalls to a program like this?

Terri, this is a great idea and I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner but I don't think it's a new idea though.

Churches have been doing this for years and years. Heck my church just finished a senior workday and in that day we had paramedics and firefighters who checked not only on what the seniors needed to have done in their homes but they also checked lighting, medications for expired drugs, and smoke detectors.

It's a great concept but we need to get over our "It's all about me" attitude that so many providers exhibit these days. If it's not a code 3 or emergency call then it's not worth running.

As soon as we can get over this attitude then I think many more services and fire departments will start to offer this.

I read this post, and a couple of things came to mind...

1. OMG, ITK has posted over 3000 times.... when I grow up, I want to be just like you!

2. Dustdevil has posted over 7000 times.... Terri, you big slacker...

But in seriousness...

That was a great article to post, and remind us that there are lots of other things we can be doing in our communities besides running calls. Part of our job is to educate people, not just about what we do, but about what they can do to help themselves.

I have seen similar programs, like Ruffems said, that are led by churches or other community groups. We have a program here, where we do go to the homes of seniors just before Christmas, and check smoke detectors, but it isn't as in depth as this article is... it is a good idea that we can expand into our program.

I think the seniors in our area would appreciate more care and attention, and this doesn't take a lot of time. We can incorporate more into the visits we currently make to seniors.

Great article to post, Terri, and a great reminder to us that there are lots of opportunities for us to improve the area we live in.

Programs like that would be a great idea. The problem in my area is staff is run so thin that no one is available. I do think it would be great for the elderly as well as maybe new parents. Go by visit and show how to make house safe for the kiddo's.

I do like the tables detailing elder abuse. It is sad to see what people do to their parents and grandparents.
