firemedic37 Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 I start in a couple days and was woundering if anyone on here has been through the program.
IowaEMT Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 I'm going to apply for the July class in '08. How hard was the application process? I'm trying to decide when would be the best time to fill out all the paperwork.
AMESEMT Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 IowaEMT - I started WAAAY early. Heck, start getting stuff filled out and figure out how you are going to pay for it. I start with firemedic37 in Jan. (like 4 days) and I turned my stuff in like in August. There is no harm. The earlier the better. The application is not hard. You fill out your application then send it in, and then you are interviewed for the program by the program director (Doug York) and Lori Hartley (Admissions, instructor, etc..). You also take the HOBET and an A&P exam. The HOBET is like the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, but the A&P is HARD! If you have taken or have the chance to take college level Anatomy and physiology do it. You take those tests the day you interview. firemedic37 - I didn't even realize you had posted...Sorry. I know several paramedics that have gone through the program and loved it. There is one, she went through the program that was last January. She said she wished that it didn't end. I guess it is a lot of fun and the instructors like to have a good time as well. See you in 4 days!! AmesEMT
fireboz184 Posted January 1, 2008 Posted January 1, 2008 what is this Paramedic - Specialist class and is it open to Iowa medics only or to any medic. I am taking a Critical Care Paramedic class that starts in Feb. Is this a similar class? Anyone with a answer or two would be greatly appreciated.

I realize this is waaaayyyy late, but better late than never in case you still had the same question brewing about in your head. The Iowa Paramedic Specialist is the National Paramedic curriculum. Why they call it Paramedic Specialist, I don't know but that's what they deemed it. An Iowa Paramedic, not a Paramedic Specialist, is the national I-99. I think they have some new things coming down the pike to change it, but as of right now it's going to be staying the same.
agh2415 Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 Bumping this. I'm looking at starting the EMT-B in May and going straight into Paramedic in July. I've read conflicting opinions on this board about whether to wait and get EMT-B experience or just jump right into Paramedic. Spoke with Bill Elder(??) today and said it was not uncommon for people to go straight to Para. Anyone do this at the Iowa program?

Spoke with Bill Elder(??) today and said it was not uncommon for people to go straight to Para. Anyone do this at the Iowa program? Bill teaches the EMT class and parts of the Paramedic program. You will hear varying opinions on this issue. As long as you are studious and motivated to learn about EMS, the transition from the May EMT class to the July Paramedic class is definitely possible and has been done before. The application deadline for the paramedic program is usually right at the beginning of the EMT class (I think the one for the July paramedic class is April 30th. If you want to do this call in to the EMSLRC and ask them what you need to do in order to make this happen. What they will probably do is have you apply for the paramedic program before you even start the EMT program. Obviously you will have to successfully complete the EMT class before they will let you start in the Paramedic class but if all goes well they will consider your application. If you aren't already enrolled in the May EMT class you are probably too late but this could be done in November/January as well.
