4.8 minutes saved assuming those speeds are maintained for the entire 15 mile trip (unlikely). You aren't exactly saving an insane amount of time there. Especially since 4.8-(time delayed due to accident/blow out/etc)=vastly negative number.

Now, I'll admit that I've reached some stupid speeds in an ambulance [never broke 100 though, but these were well maintained freeways with more than plenty of following time]. That doesn't make it right and it took my company cracking down [read actually monitoring the speeds] before I stopped. Especially since, in the end, you really have to travel a good distance before you actually save time.

I work for a private ambulance company and we have a tattle tale. We can only go 10 MPH over the posted speed limit on a regular run and in an emergency, we can go up to 73 mph. Anything over 73, the boss-man gets a buzz.

To answer your question, safe driving should always be in the forefront of your mind when you sit in the drivers seat of any vehicle, let alone an ambulance which (A) You don't own and ( Is WAY bigger than what you normally drive. You wouldn't take the road at 100+ MPH with your kids in the back seat, unbuckled...would you? So don't take the chance with someone else's.

If you're in the back unbuckled, especially on a non-emergency transport, then you're most likely doing something wrong [exceptions would be actively getting something out of a cabinet, moving from one seat to another (sue me, I prefer to sit in the jump seat and not on the bench). Taking vital signs is not included].

To be fair 5 minutes is considerable around here as far as adding or chipping that away from a response time. HUGE. Of course, that's no justification.

We run Road Safety at my provider and it has a 68MPH Cap. And to be honest it is a good thing... it has the gyroscope limits for turns and hard braking as well... No expectation to be a perfect driver just a more aware and safe driver.

One thing I just thought of was the mentioning of the use of governors. Would there be some out there that had them not only for speed, but also for fuel considerations? Especially for times like these. We had some units with big engines, a couple with 400's and at least one with a 460 in it and along with four barrel Holly's....but when gas got up to $1.00/gal., the boss told us to be more fuel conscience.

In what way? Curtailing pleasure trips for food and entertainment? Shutting the engine off instead of leaving it idling? Not using the AC? Losing weight?

This is so very true..They tout it as so efficient. How efficient, or responsible even, is it with the petrol prices so high??. Just another area it falls short. IMHO

Are you talking unleaded gasoline, diesel, "nitro", biofuel, compressed natural gas, or some other exotic fuel?

I spent $3.30 (United States Dollars) per gallon regular unleaded gasoline the last time I refueled my Chevy Venture minivan. Is fuel still so inexpensive where you are geographically located?
