But experts say success in keeping those patients alive is one of the most telling indicators of the overall quality of an emergency medical system.

Now, far be it from me to defend DCFD EMS. It simply cannot be done honestly. But, with no intention of defending DCFD, I still have to say that I am tired of that worn out BS. That statistic is next to meaningless. The article unwittingly goes on to explain exactly why it is meaningless. Because public access and bystander CPR affect the numbers, as do the demographics of the community itself. Consequently, the numbers represent a very broad picture that really says nothing about the quality or effectiveness of local EMS. Then you take agencies like Seattle that cook the books and manipulate the numbers in order to present a predetermined conclusion, and the picture becomes even less clear.

DCFD EMS sucks arse. There is no doubt about that. But this story/study is completely irrelevant to that fact.

Dust beat me to the punch on the main line I had an issue with. The other thing that I am a bit skeptical about is this:

In the arena of cardiac arrest survival, Seattle is the national leader. Two of every three, or 67 percent, of cardiac arrest patients make it to the emergency room alive, according to data compiled by the Abaris Group, a consulting firm that worked with the city's EMS task force last year.

Arriving in the emergency room with a pulse is important, but experts said the true rate of cardiac arrest survival is how many people are discharged from the hospital. In Seattle, that's 45 percent of cardiac arrest patients, according to Abaris.

I am aware that Seattle has a high success rate in treating cardiac arrests, but these numbers sound way too high. Does this only include VT/VF arrests?
