zzyzx Posted August 21, 2008 Author Posted August 21, 2008 Nope, he didn't eat any chicken. His K+ is within normal limits.
Timmy Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 What’s our temperature? Any sign of diaphoresis? Been overseas lately?
Canadian Caesar Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 Skin colour? Specifically, are his cheeks a little red, or his toes or fingers? Any skin peeling anywhere on his body? Any edema anywhere? What HAS his diet been then? If he hasn't eaten much poultry? Any fish in his diet?
zzyzx Posted August 21, 2008 Author Posted August 21, 2008 No, he hasn't been overseas. Nothing remarkable about his diet. No diaphoresis. His skins signs are normal, and there is no edema. He doesn't appear febrile.
chbare Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 Possible Guillan Barret status post a viral illness? Take care, chbare.
zzyzx Posted August 21, 2008 Author Posted August 21, 2008 Congrats Chbare! It indeed was Guillain-Bare syndrome. I ran this call two years ago, and to be honest I really thought this guy was faking. I hadn't heard of any disorder could cause you to wake up paralyzed. Here's more info on Guillain-Bare syndrome: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guillian_Barre_syndrome
mshow00 Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 So he got a virus that ended up making his body attack the myelinated nerves of the lower extremities and (or could have) worked its way up, I understand that, but what about the virus? Can any virus do this or is it a particular one (or strain)?
chbare Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 Many links to the cause of GBS exist. Nothing absolutely definitive however. Organisms commonly associated with GBS include; CMV, Campylobacter jejuni, EBV, and HIV. In addition, many substances and conditions such as lupus are associated with GBS. The typical course involves a patient who develops GBS following a respiratory or GI infection. Take care, chbare.
