Type II ambulances on 911-calls

Are there any of you guys that use Type II van-type ambulances for the 911-work on ILS/ALS-level?

If yes: do you have enough space for your equipment and to do your work properly? Do you get support from another unit or the FD?

Yes, Yes, and no we didn't get a support crew. It worked just fine, and had a way smoother ride than the type III.

I work out of a van, I think the older MedTech vans are bigger then new Wheeled Coach vans, at least at my company.

We dont use FD for EMS help.

I have worked in vans for BLS 911, and recently ran a call as an ALS provider. I was assisting one of our BLS trucks. There was 1 EMT, an EMT student, the patient, and me. Needless to say, the student tried really hard to be part of the wall.

We only have 1 van left, and it's on the short list to leave.

(other than annual 'improvements', the rest of our 15 trucks are the same).

OK, vans are type 2, "cutaway" vans are type 3. What about type ones? You know, the ones look like a pickup truck with a big box on the back?

Yup did it for years, I like a type I or III better, but it can be done and has been done, numerous units in l;ower manhattan used to use type 2 because of the narrower streetas, mostly in lower ES and China town areas,

Richard, theres a few local companies that have that type you mentioned, but I have never rode in one, my service don't have one.

We borrowed a type II while one of our trucks was being remounted, it wasn't too terribly different to work out of, a bit smaller than what we were used to.

But then, our type I ambulances still have old, 70's model boxes which have been remounted several times, and are smaller than the ones my part time job has.

The problem I have with them is the side mount stretcher, which gives you very limited access to the right side of your patient.

Not to mention they are shorter, so if you aren't a midget, you tend to bang the hell out of your head until you get used to ducking automatically.

On that: They thought I was 67 inches tall, not 66 inches, but then the bump on my head healed.

we run out of type 2's. It can get a little cramped with 2 patients on backboards but the only thing I wish we could carry is a stair chair. Other than that we have a lot of equipment on them.
