Richard B the EMT Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 A pen on a lanyard, or one on a retractable cord, have a bad potential. They are attached to you, and if a patient grabs the pen, they also have you. Think about the reason for "breakaway ties" for uniforms, and reconsider this plan.
emtannie Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 Your theory is valid Richard, and I should have clarified... we did try this with several of these high quality dollar store retractable pens... the strings broke very easily, so if a patient wanted to grab it, they would get the pen, but not you. Where it was linked on the pocket would tear easily if you put the caribiner clip through it too, so if a patient went for the clip, they could get it, but the pocket would tear, so you could still either retreat or advance as you wished. Sorry - my bad for not giving more details.
