wow....once again, a thread has not only gone into left field, but damn near jumped the fence into a completely different ballgame!!!!!

LOL, anyway...  ..... Regardless of fire, fire/medic, medic, hose humper, box jockey, etc., the patient(s) who suffer from a medical condition(((since THATS what this thread is about))) deserve to have professional, competent care given to them. If you are a fire fighter as well as a medic, then I think thats great!! But if you CHOOSE to be a professional in both specialties, then please don't disrespect either side. Be the bigger person and treat both with respect, for if you cannot, then perhaps you shouldn't be on both sides.

ALSO....just because someone decides to speak on behalf of the rest of the career personnel (whether fire side or medical side) doesn't make the entire group incompetent, only themselves. Please don't dummy yourself down to their level by being ignorant. Some wacko comes in the post and a lot of responses that were posted were truly shocking to me. Didn't expect that kind of talk from some of the people I held in higher regard here.

Disappointed.

I'm sorry. I'm dissapointed in me as well. But for a positive point I did try and get the discussion back on track. :D

wellllll..... ok, spenac. JUST DON'T LET IT HAPPEN AGAIN OR YOU'LL GET A NAUGHTY SPANKING AND NO PRESENTS FROM SANTA, YOU HEAR ME YOUNG MAN!?!?!?!

Yes, you made a wonderful attempt on getting back on track.

Bottom line: 12 leads are a valuable asset to EMS providers. 8)

Hey all I know Mr. Ambodriver is if that BS degree helps you operate a ambo then more power to you bro. However let me break it down to you, you see we already have enough propeller heads in this industry that think that getting a masters and being a wizard is so much more important then street smarts. How about you leave the realistic life saving to the professionals (firefighter/paramedics) that don't worry about being able to recite a medical manual word for word. Reality is the key to sucess in the 21st century

I fail to see your point. I am a fire medic. Nice try though!

As far as how much should medics learn about 12 leads? Everything. When I call report to the hospital my readings are on point---I would expect the same out of everyone else giving me info on a 12 lead.

Great answer. The more in depth we understand, the more respect our calls in the field will get from the ER's. If we call in and say the line goes up and down and may be a little wide but not sure and the humps are maybe not same shape and I don't know if this matters but in one spot the lines are real tall and in another they are real low, Not going to get much respect. I'm not a 12 lead expert yet but I'm getting there. :)

Here we are only required to recognize STEMI, but the protocol allows us to use them for any rhythm we're having difficulty interpreting where a 12 lead might help. That being said, protocol is the minimum acceptable standard. I never think it should be an acceptable answer to say "Bah, I don't need to know that *&$^!" In the early stages of education I can understand leaving aside more complicated factors until you master the fundamentals, but if you've every given up learning and pushing yourself to understand more of what's going on with your patient's you've gotten complacent and you will start missing things.

Which reminds me I have a questions about 12 lead, but I'll post it elsewhere if I can't find an answer in my other text so I don't hijack the thread again.

haha I have to say, I'm disappointed in all you guys for feeding into that previous discussion. CLEARLY the guy was trying to egg people on. "We are dialed in shape firefighting machines," haha come on. That guy is a genius and I'm sorry to see him go, he had me laughing out loud for a good ten minutes.

<--- Dialed in 12 lead reading machine.

That kind of sounds like a Venticular Technocardia.
