I'll play devil's advocate....

Why does all that matter to the individual doing the work that he is the only medic in the region? Doesn't that mean that he has a better chance of getting a high volume of high acuity calls (which is what many want)?

this I do have to agree with...I have worked urban, suburban, and rural EMS and they all have their pluses and minuses...but having legit calls is always nice.

New Jersey is behind in terms of protocols and utilization of ALS. From what I've heard, it's also very mother-may-I if you do happen to have a paramedic on your squad, which most don't.

Note the profuse bitching from anyone currently on this forum who actually works in Jersey. Why are you moving there, just out of curiosity? FOR the job? Or moving there because of something else, so you need a job?

I have family there...I grew up in NYC...so I would be moving to be closer to my family and need a job and at this point this all I am qualified for...lol

uh...no

but no one really got into specifics much...they just pretty much said it sux...but the links to threads really explained why it is so bad.

New Jersey isn't all about that, in fact, there are some portions of Jersey that are quite the opposite (Part of it is below the Mason Dixon Line). Anyway, the failure with EMS in NJ has to do with non progressive ALS, and unlicensed BLS. From a BLS standpoint, the standard of care varies from two emt's on a truck, to two 'first aiders'. EMT's have a very small scope of practice, and much of that is prevented by the New Jersey First Aid Council. BLS primarily provided by volunteers, the First Aid Council is pretty much an assembly of all of them. I know ALS wise, many Paramedics I work with would like more aggressive protocols, allowing more to be done on standing orders. It is from what I know, a very "mother may I system". The whole EMS system is trying to be changed, as a new EMS study came out last year, providing recommendations to improve the system. We'll see how much of that gets changed.

Hears a new suggestion,,,, live in NJ,and work as a Medic at one of the Pvt. 9-1-1 hosptials in NYC... they pay pretty well, and get some good calls, depending on where you work,, and you wiont have to deal with the NJ B.S.... +++ you already have a NYS Medic card... all you need to do is get you REMAC NYC cert.. (basically a protocol test)...
