Who said I was referring to myself? I think masturbating at work is inappropriate as well. It's just not as obvious. We don't monitor or really think about folks just going to the bathroom. Disappearing into the back room with your coworker is a different matter. I didn't defend masturbating on company time by saying it was private; I said I didn't care because generally speaking, you're not going to notice the difference between your partner taking a crap and doing something else. Hence, I don't really care what you do in the bathroom.

Just because doctors and nurses and other paramedics choose to be unprofessional at work doesn't mean that it's ok. Because some people choose to show up half-dressed and put unnecessary 14 gauge IV's in drunks doesn't mean it's ok. Just because people choose to come in to work hung-over or still inebriated on a daily basis doesn't mean it's ok. Because YOU happen to think that it's fun and wonderful to get your jollies at work doesn't mean that it should be an acceptable industry standard for behavior.

Sorry. If making love is a beautiful thing, why would you push for doing it at WORK, where your clothes are covered in patient yuck, your bunk is not necessarily just your own, where you will be interrupted at a moment's notice because you're at work.... not romantic. Not professional. If you really care about a gratifying sexual experience, you care enough to wait until you're at home, on your own time, and can focus on your partner. I think anyone who feels like they have to get it on in the station has exhibitionist tendencies and just doesn't want to admit it. As discreet as you may think you're being, you're still exposing your relationship with that person to your coworkers in a way they might not wish it to be exposed.

Like I said, if you can't see the difference, you're part of the problem of unprofessionalism that is holding us back.

I dont know, i smell a double standard here --- if you can watch a sex act on tv and then go in the bathroom and finish the act alone -- then I dont see why me and a female cant go in the same bathroom and make each other happy. And although you may see it as gross, i see it as passion. I would rather have sex in the bunkroom while the hosemonkeys are on a structure fire, then risk doing it on a bed at the local Days Inn --- where thousands of people have had sex, and the non-english speaking employees have a different standard for what is clean.

But I do agree with you on the large bore needle as punishment -- that is patient abuse, and those medics should be fired.

Do you have any idea how many doctors and nurses (and nurses and paramedics) get it on every day at the hospital ?Making love is a beautiful thing, and the way I prefaced it was in a "private" manner, which is how you defended taking matters into your own hands in the bathroom --- if you are allowed to satisfy yourself in the bathroom, then I should be allowed to also (youall are just trying to keep the black man down --LOL) I see nothing wrong with it as long as it is kept private and it is between consenting adults with no coersion.

Sounds like you work at a pretty unprofessional place. At the hospitals I am familar with, resident doctors and staff physicians would be severely reprimanded if unprofessional conduct is even rumored to where it adds as a distraction to the patient care environment. Most are made aware of this policy on the first day of their residency and few things are worth getting kick out from a good hospital with a less then professional recommendation.

Nurses also know they can be fired if there is any evidence of having sex while on the clock.

If it does happen with nurses and doctors, you are not going to read about it on their forums to where their peers will know that their professionalism in a patient care environment is questionable.

I suppose I could refer to your thread "Why are you guys so scared?" and wonder how amused some of the lurkers must be will reading this thread. You may have started this thread to get your jollies and you are probably masturbating while reading the posts.

You are right these actions are unprofessional as they can actually even cause harm to patients.

I have to agree with Wendy on this one. There IS a 'difference' between watching a movie and engaging in sexual activity while on duty. I don't care if it's with someone of the same sex, your partner, or your 'significant other'.

Further, I don't care how many other people 'are doing it', it's still unprofessional.

Personally, I think that sneaking off to the storage room, back room, bathroom or any other place at the station is extremely tacky, and above all that, if you can't control your hormones at work, then you should think of another line of work where you don't need to exercise much 'self control', if any at all.

While the current trend is to be more 'open minded and accepting', the standards of professionalism do not change, even in a more 'liberal' generation.

I'm sorry Chrochity, but just to be clear, and not meant to be mean, but I was under the impression you don't work in EMS or healthcare anymore. If that's the case, what are your comments about how often it happens based on? I know we can only ever speak to our own experiences and as a student I've only spoken to mine, not those of all the services and hospitals I don't work at.

And for the record, I don't think it's a good idea to watch porn in the station either, or masturbate, or volunteer to do breast exams on female co-workers (or prostate exams on males coworkers).
