This article is making it into many peoples news. I wonder if it will lead to an increase in claims of improper contact? Think about it...........

Lung sounds, heart sounds, 12 lead, trauma, OB, to name just a few times you will be seeing and touching near what many patients consider the no no parts  . All of those above require seeing skin and touching skin. For one quick example, larger breasted woman, you even have to lift/push/etc (touch) breast in order to do proper 12 lead, lung sounds, and even trauma check.

Will fear of getting false claims cause you to skip some necessary exams?

I have always favored back ground checks on those testing for either state or national certification. A sex offender may be able to take the class, but when it comes to testing there should also be a back ground check to prevent them from taking the test and becoming certified. Also, employers need to be more alert to the possible sex offender that may have gotten certified.

There was only one I know of personally that got nailed. And he was the last person you would have expected. I worked with a lot of creepy appearing people and those that just didn't seem "quite right". But this guy was a Medic that I had worked with, taught, even went bowling with the guy a few times. It wasn't until right after he got his Paramedic and moved south that he did what he did. We heard it on the news and couldn't believe it. I thought maybe since he was now working in a college town there might have been some co-ed that mistaken his actions. But he confessed to it. I don't know if I was more disappointed or p!ssed at the time. I think he got 3-5 yrs in prison. I won't go into detail of what he did, but it was bad.

...But you basically did just denigrate basics here. I don't know the numbers but until you can prove that the majority of the molesters are basics you need to back the truck up and hold on a second. That was a generalization that should not have been made.

Bullshit. It's the obvious question that should be asked in this thread by any thinking person. You can get into the field with a few weeks of simple training, many people give the ambulance trust and respect, the cost is low, access to victims is high. Would the fact that becoming a medic make a difference? Don't know, just saying it's an obvious question and it doesn't disrespect any basics except those that don't want to look at this situation honestly.

Is it important to identify the categories that the offenders come from? Of course! If they are mostly basics then we protect the patients by making it harder to qualify, or making the prequalifying security tighter. If basics are in the minority, then we need to learn to screen the types of people that are becoming medics, assuming this is a problem at all.

With 900,000 (according to the article) I'd be curious to know how the offense percentage compares with police, fire, hospitals, or even a random selection of the general public. There is no use yelling fire if the number is ridiculously low, though of course it still gives necessary data to attempt to eliminate the issue entirely.

When did you decide that you are the appropriateness monitor for these threads?

Doc, what the hell are you doing apologizing for asking a valid question that you obviously made very clear??

The City has always, (since I’ve been a member, and before) prided itself on seeking education despite PC appearances.

What the hell is going on here?

Dwayne are you really sleep deprived? Ruff just stated the fact that we need facts presented before you say all molesters are basics. Actually most reports I have found show it to be the Paramedics. As a fellow poster that has always promoted different opinions I feel you are in the wrong attacking Ruffems. Docs statement not question did make it sound like he was saying basics. Ruff basically said show the facts before attacking basics. Just saying.

In El Paso a year or two ago a paramedic sucked his patients breasts when he thought she was unconscious. At the hospital when she was able to talk she told. They swabbed her breast and found his DNA. I posted the article here sometime ago.

Paramedic Charge Raises Concerns

Police Charge Fire Employee With Misdemeanor

Wednesday, January 18, 2006

January 18, 2006 -- The El Paso Fire Department responds after one of their own is arrested on sexual allegations.

During a press conference Wednesday, El Paso Fire Department Chief, Roberto Rivera, addressed the issue. "I want to reassure the people that the behavior that was alleged is in no way condoned and is addressed immediately when we hear a complaint," said Rivera.

Until the case is settled, Chief Rivera says Lieutenant Joe Montenegro has been relieved from duty. Montenegro was arrested and charged with official oppression, which is a misdemeanor charge.

In the criminal complaintm the victim alleges that during a semi-conscious state in the back of an ambulance "she felt someone touch and suck on her breasts." Later tests showed Montenegro's DNA on the victim's breast.

KFOX questioned police about applying the less serious misdemeanor charge, as opposed to sexual assault.

Police officials responded that it didn't meet the criteria, offering no specific explanation.

Here is what I read....

I know we always harp on the education thing (with good reason), but I wonder how many of those involved were Basics?

Question, supported below.

...I don't mean to denigrate the basics on this forums, most of whom by being here and seeking any form of further education, have got to be head and shoulders above their peers as they've been described on here.

Compliment to the basics here, with the disclaimer that he's gotten the information on "general" basics from this site and not personal knowledge. And then uses that information only to compare 'our' basics with ‘other’ basics, not with predators or pedophiles.

...But say you're a predatory individual, attracted to power, looking for vulnerable victims and someone tells you that with a couple of weekends, you too can work on an Ambulance and be a hero to everyone. Predators are going to actively look for wa(y)s to hunt, but we don't need to make EMS a ridiculously easy to enter haven for them.

An opinion, combined with a theory, closed with an opinion that perhaps we've made it too easy for predators to have access to susceptible victims. That makes perfect sense to me.

And for the record, regarding sleep, I played the bullshit Afghanistan card as an excuse for jumping on Mobey, yet anyone over here knows it was crap to do so and I should be, and am, embarrassed that I made excuses for being a dick. I have it way easier than most over here so have no reason for special favors when I've been an ass or an idiot. Sometimes a rose is just a rose, and sometimes a dick is just a dick.

I've made it as easy as I know how to quote the parts where you feel he insults basics, or states that basics are an issue in any way. Please feel free to do so, as this is an important point to me, and I look forward to getting it all sorted out.
