Wilderness Medical Associates (WMA) have been instructing their graduates to pad backboards during long transfers (their "wilderness" specificiation is >2 hours to definitive care). They suggest using those thin mattresses many use for isolation from the ground while camping. They actually (and understandably) put a lot of emphasis on padding all splints.

We use a SKED and OSS for SAR team and I absolutely love the device.

Have used Vacume Spinal Imobilizers ... but they are NOT inexpensive and cant even remember who makes them, I think like 10 G a piece ???? One can fall asleep in one of those, like an old bean bag chair concept with the air pumped out ... very sweet kit.

In the boonies I pack a SKED and OSS an only 24 pounds, raises, lowers the works.

I like this idea DocHarris got a picture ?

lol Doc

How about bubble wrap placed on the conventional board. Not only will it provide good cushioning but it will also give you and the pt something to do on those long transports.

Anybody have a decade's worth of JEMS? I have a vague memory of something inflatable to put onto the long back board before loading a patient onto it. Something like place device on board, place patient on top, secure patient to ensemble, and inflate.

I actually thought of this a few decades ago, using rubberized foam (similar to water rescue and athletic mats) made of. Never made it past the idea phase though...

We use a vac mattress on long transports and flights over here. What an incredible tool IMHO.

Take care,

chbare.

I cant wait to start transporting psych patients with this!!!

Ones ganna be all happy to the point that the ER will ask why I even bothered to bring them in...

Another is ganna think their insides are exploding!

In all seriousness though, its not a bad approach to JP's idea.
