Just Plain Ruff Posted February 14, 2009 Author Posted February 14, 2009 You and i and everyone else do live in a free country but a company has the right to not hire you or fire you if you do something that would make the company look bad. I don't have any problem not hiring someone who's facebook page/or myspace page is inappropriate. The picture I'm referring to is not a nude pic, it's what the person is doing at the time of the picture that's at issue here. So let me ask you all a question, what is acceptable and what is not? From a free country standpoint that Happiness is taking Are nude pics on facebook or myspace acceptable? Are pictures of you doing drugs acceptable? Are participating in a satanic ritual acceptable? Just what is acceptable and what is not???
spenac Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 Actually it does not matter what I feel is acceptable. If I want a job what matters is what the places I apply consider acceptable.
Happiness Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 OK Ruff I'll answer the questions from my point of view. But one thing you have to keep in mind is that we havent seen the pic that you are refering to. #1 I don't think any tactful nude pics are wrong anywhere. One thing my 83 year old great aunt taught me was that the human body is one of the most beautiful and amazing things in this world. Now with that being said Im a pretty liberal person and I accept alot in life, but I have to agree that there is a limit of art over just discusting and rude. #2 I am going on limb here but I do believe that everyone has the right to do what they want on their own time. I dont know what drugs your talking about but take a look at the swimmer and the bong. Do I think any less of him now, no I do not. He went through all the drug tests hes won his medals and now the high life style bit him in the ass. I managed the local pub here for years before i was a medic and I have to tell you I saw way more issues with people drinking than the ones that smoked pot. The big difference is one is legal and the other isn't. #3 Satanic rituals, well if they are doing something illegal then they need to be called on it. Satanism is a religion to some just like wica and being a catholic. They have the freedom to practise whatever. So the orginal post was a warning of what you put on these sites and thanks because alot of people don't realize that these sites are not a secure as they advertise. I think who ever you saw has very poor judgement on posting the pics or if one of her friends posted it but like I said before we do live in a free country. On another note with all of our technology we as a society have opened up to the world and let everyone know who we are. You never know who is lerking in the shadows and people are forgetting that. We have to be careful on who we let into our virtual lives. PS I think if you saw my Stagette pics you wouldn't think I was a professional (Some are that bad) but my friends and I had alot of clean fun and yes they are on facebook not mine mind you.
Don1977 Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 I was perusing facebook tonight and I looked at a member of this site's photo album. That member will remain anonymous but.... There was a very questionable photo on their facebook photo album. If I was a personnel manager I would put this person on a do not hire list based on that photo alone but the other photos were of this person obviously on their 21'st birthday. I know that people want to be free in expressing themselves to the world but the photo bordered on the pornographic. At a previous employer, clients would get our names and then go to our myspace, or our facebook pages and if they did not like what they saw they would refuse to bring us into their organization. I know of two people who were let go from my previous company based on their myspace pages. One client actually said that they didn't hire a consultant because of the myspace page. This client who didn't hire the person from a consulting company cost that consulting company over 250K for a one year contract. Your profiles are looked at. They are scrutinized by companies and this is an easy way to either make or break your entrance into a particular company. This is a warning and a heads up. It just seems that some people don't get it. I'm ranting and raving and my blood sugar is about 260 right now so I better just stop. take this warning however you want to take it. Leaves me out.....im over 21 and don't have a facebook. Myspace is enough

ERDoc Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 So those w/o a body could not pose nude per you? Isn't it hard to be nekkid if you don't have a body? I don't think there is a big demand for decapitated porn (but I could be way off). Gives a new definition to giving head. OK, I'll stop now. Seriously though, if I were an employer I would want to know as much as possible about someone I was hiring. Everyone can make themselves look good in an interview but when you get to look at their personal life you get a better picture of the person you are hiring. That being said, I wouldn't make it a guaranteed fail for a few crazy pictures. PS-Itku2er, welcome to the club.
Happiness Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 oh ya i forgot "I was taught not to be judgemental against my pts" and I try not to be judgemental against anyone. just saying
WolfmanHarris Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 The unfortunate double edged part of being treated as a professional and being one, is that you start having to face more and more scutiny and higher expectation. For example, I don't care one bit about what the person serving me my coffee at Tim Horton's does outside of work. I do care whether the Police Officer pulling me over drinks/gambles to excess, or if my Physician posts nude pictures of themselves online; even if it has not effect on their job performance. This is admittedly not based on reason. I am however being honest with how I would feel about these things and there in lies the issue. An employer wants its Paramedics to be trusted and thought of as professionals by their patients. They know that patients, just like the rest of us, especially when we are detached from a situation, aren't always able to set aside our knee-jerk reactions. In fact the less invested we are the less likely we are to take the time and effort to engage with it reasonably. When we hear that another Paramedic has gotten into trouble, we dive in and try to look at the how and why and examine the issue and how to address it. When a massage therapist (or insert any other profession/trade) gets into trouble we tend to read the article, process it and move on with that initial reaction being our only one. Police Officers can and do get into trouble for what they do outside of work. Teachers can and do get into trouble for what they do outside of work. Lawyers. Doctors. Pharmacists. Professions have ethical codes and standards that usually go beyond the job. So if we want to be professionals and treated differently than taxi drivers, we need to accept that and realize that the more we clamor for the respect of the public, the more we must accept being under their microscope.
spenac Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 oh ya i forgot "I was taught not to be judgemental against my pts" and I try not to be judgemental against anyone. just saying Ruff was not being judgemental. He was trying to help people get jobs or avoid losing them. Regardless of how open minded you are your boss may not be. Even myself I try and keep an open mind but as someone that has owned a business I have to look at things based on how the majority may view things. So whats best for the business may mean I have to base my decision to hire some one with more of a closed minded view. Right or wrong if two people of equal qualification apply and one has drunken party pics posted and the other doesn't I would hire the one w/o. This is the way of business.
Happiness Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 ok i apologies for the judgement remark it wasn't directed at ruff it was in general. So as Doc says i am not in disagreement with his comments but it does set a double standard in out society. As we start having the ability to enter others personal live via the internet we are now opening another way to judge people. Emergency personal are the one of the highest with drug and alcohol issues. Why is that because we have stress and some have the access to them. My father was a dispatcher for the RCMP when I was a teenager and let me tell you I saw alot of behaviors from those members that I shouldn't have. And even worst it was acceptable. I think that I should be able to let loose sometimes and not have to worry about someone taking a picture and putting it on the internet but unfortunatly that is not the way it is. And one more thing about what is acceptable. There are those things that I might find alright and the person that is sitting beside me dosn't. We cant all be perfect and we cant all think the same it would defently be a boring place to be if it was.
