Typical NJ EMS unprofessionalism. Fire them all.

Video shows horseplay in EMT vehicle

BY MATT PAIS • STAFF WRITER • MARCH 13, 2009

LAKEWOOD
— Township officials are reviewing a video clip posted on the Internet that apparently shows an ambulance and another emergency medical service vehicle being used for joyrides through a snow-covered parking lot.

The clip, posted on the car-enthusiast Web site streetfire.net and later taken down, is a little more than three minutes long and appears to depict the two vehicles purposely being driven erratically in the parking lot of the BlueClaws stadium at Cedar Bridge and New Hampshire avenues during a heavy snowstorm.

The video, according to the Web site, was posted by a user named"sickashelltom" on March 3, a day after up to a foot of snow fell in the area. The video carries the title "Cops Drifting in Snow!!!" but it shows an EMS squad car equipped with overhead lights, not a police car.

Township Manager Frank Edwards said he was made aware of the video by EMS supervisor Scott Carter and has asked for a written report of the known facts of the video. After receiving the report, Edwards said, he and a labor lawyer will review the video and determine whether any action will be taken against squad members.

"Beyond that, it's a personnel matter, and I'm not going to comment," Edwards said.

Carter, who is in charge of the paid department, could not be reached for comment.

The video was filmed at night and appears to have been recorded from inside another car parked in the snow-covered lot. Set to the soundtrack of Kid Rock's "Devil Without a Cause," much of the filmed action focuses on the sedan sharply turning and spinning out across the snow.

At one point, a passenger from the front seat of the ambulance trades places with the driver of the sedan and begins another series of spins and slides. The video closes with a shot of the ambulance spinning in a tight circle before drifting out of view.

If you look hard enough, there's a video out there somewhere of several AMR crews (Massachusetts, I think) that were joyriding in the snow, dragging some of the personnel behind one of the ambulances on a chain of backboards.

After watching the video, I can only say that I hope those involved were fired on the spot!

I also read about 8 pages of comments, mostly defending the actions of these people. (They were getting drivers training in snow conditions, yeah...riiiight!)

What they've done amounts to nothing more than what the topic of this thread is.....

I could not get the video to play but I have mixed feelings on this topic. I read the comments of others after the article and there were some really good points.

When I buy a new motorcycle I take the advanced STARS course so I can learn to operate it properly and confidently. I have never driven an ambulance and have yet to ride in one so I would like the opportunity to take a training course on how to properly maneuver it in any given situation. Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending or condoning this type of behavior. I am wondering, after seeing and reading this, whether or not there is training available on how to properly handle the ambulance (not just any ambulance, but your ambulance) in all weather situations.

While not defending this type of reckless behaviour I remember a thread a while back on driving in hazardous conditions, someone suggested driving an Ambulance in snow in an area like a parking lot to find out how it behaved. maybe they are EMTCITY members and were just following this advice!!

They weren't in an ambulance. They were in a "fly car". And it is quite obvious from the video that they were not practising anything. They were just randomly spinning out.

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
