So its fairly common for you guys to lock your trucks?

I can't speak for anyone except the places I have worked. That last two civilian EMS services I worked for (military too, for that matter), it was a strict written policy that the vehicle remained locked at all times. This is something that I insisted my partner follow, even if he did not usually do so with other partners. No door is left unlocked at any time, even if we are in the ambulance. it takes a half a second to close the door behind you when taking the patient out of the ambulance at the hospital. There is no excuse for not doing so other than apathy and laziness.

But I am sure there are quite a few EMS agencies that are less than professionally managed that either have no policy on the matter, or no enforcement of the policy. In those cases, the management ought to be fired when this happens.
