Hello my name is Chris and I came across this site on accident, but have quickly become an avid fan of it. I had a quick question, does anyone know where I can be a stand-alone emt, as being a firefighter is not an interest of mine. The only place I have come across is NYC fire department, where you work for the fire department but the firefighter and emt or medic jobs are completely seperate of each other. I know I am going to have to keep looking at major cities and that is fine, but I just hope I don't have to do an internet search of every major city in the U.S. to find out. Any help is appreciated.

Thank you.

Why don't you start with telling us where you are located and where you are willing to be located? I can think of about 25 Different employment options for an EMT-B in NYC where it is unnecessary to also be a fire fighter.

The one thing to remember is that not every city, even major city, is served by a municipally-owned service. Some have contracts with private ambulance services, some are covered by county agencies, and still others are covered by hospital-based services. So, 1) googling a random city and poking around their government site isn't necessarily going to get you the answer you want, and 2) you need to decide what types of agencies you ARE willing to work for.

In any event, for starters:

Boston MA (city)

Austin/Travis County TX (county)

Pittsburgh PA (city)

Portland, OR (private)

Charlotte, SC (private)

Tulsa, OK (public utility/private)

Denver, CO (hospital)

Indianapolis, IN (hospital)

New Orleans, LA (city)

Philadelphia, PA (FD- single role)

Baltimore, MD (FD- single role[i think])

Thank you for your responses. I currently live in Arizona and I am going to be going to school for my EMT-B, but I am basically willing to move anywhere. I am just trying to see who has what and then plan from there. I just wanted to see what might be available and then go from there. Thank you for your responses.

In Texas you will find many 911 services that have no fire ties. You will have a better chance of getting hired if you go ahead and get your Paramedic before applying.

Winn1,

First off, make sure that any state you might prefer to practice being an EMT in, accepts the Arizona EMT training, or National Registry.

Unless the rules have changed, while the NYS DoH allows for National Registry training, they don't accept it from beyond our state borders.

Second, I am both a New York State EMT, and a "Mission Specific" EMS EMT in the Fire Department of New York (City). As pointed out, in the FDNY, EMTs and Paramedics do NOT fight fires, and Fire Fighters are only required to have a NY State DoH (Department of Health) Certified First Responder-Defibrillator training.

And last but not least,

Welcome Aboard!
