For the uninformed, the general nickname for an ambulance in New York City, from roughly the 1890s, is a Bus. They actually followed a kind of schedule, and route. If the "Ambulance Surgeon", who was actually an intern MD, felt was the patient was emergent, he would have the teamster/driver head the horse drawn ambulance towards the hospital at top speed.
