I've recently applied to an EMT program at my local fire station, its a free program as long as i give them 2 years of volunteer work with 12 hours a week. anyways i really want to get in, but i have some points on my license (6 points). 1 minor accident and 2 speeding tickets that were in bad areas without good sign postage, talking to the guy at the station he said that the only way i could not be accepted into the program is if the city cannot insure me because of my points, so i basically want to know is if anyones knows what their city insurance does, like if they have a limit or if they know anyone not getting hired because of that. i do have an option of talking a class that will take 2 points off which i am going to take. im just super worried that i wont get accepted, and its KILLING me not knowing. any feedback will help. thanks!

Up to the individual department as to what their insurance will cover. Best to just wait and see and do what you can to take the points off. I doubt anyone here will give you a definitive answer though as individual city's insurance is just that.... individual.

Good luck!

Go to the "city hall", or municipal building, and talk to someone that knows the answer. However, the way we do it, the municipality provides workman's compensation by law, and we provide death and disability; as well as liability. But we don't provide like health insurance. Just for duty related injuries, illness and loss of life. As far as I know, there's nothing that would prevent a person from being added on, as long as they were approved to be a member of the organization. Usually, you're only rejected for past infamous crimes, like felonies, etc.

1) Go with the points reduction class, if only for yourself.

2) Does your area allow for EMTs who treat only, and don't drive the ambulances? I would explore this possibility.
