Ummm he may not have used the term "firemonkey" and such this time, but he's constantly posting comments of that nature. It doesn't matter what the topic is, monkey sees "fire", monkey bashes "fire". That was the ponit of my comment.

Our EMS division is fully funded, so I don't see your point. My rig is brand new with 4000 miles and that new "green" technology where the exhaust is retained and superheated, and requires a regeneration if driven at slow speeds too often. Our supplies are fully stocked. Since our personnel are dual role, we don't have problems such as burnout due to mandatory OT, and our firemedics get a break from excessive call volume by rotating to and from the engine. Retention and longevity are easier to achieve when firemedics can work different aspects of the job and not get burnt or feel "stuck" in a certain position. I agree with fire based EMS probably as much if not more than you disagree with it. Don't project the shortcomings and faults of your former dept onto mine.

Bully for you I guess, I have a 20yr old strecher and the ambulance is older I think. As for rooh breath you better get thick skin because now your in the radar. I thought this was in funny stuff and this is where you have to have a sense of humor and if ya dont, dont read the stuff.

Lol - I've seen this floating around and very pertinent to the EMS side of things even though more than a few carry over to the ER as well (for our medic in ER friends). Happy holidays.

Envy? I doubt it, very much. Anyone can become a volunteer firefighter.

I too am a volunteer firefighter in a small country town. I joined because I wanted to help the community, we don't have a hug amount of volunteers, I enjoy the company of the other volunteers, I enjoy the training and associated challenges and I'd like to think that if something went wrong that appropriately trained people are there to help. I have no desire to become a Career Firefighter or do Firefighting full time. I like having the flexibility of being a volunteer, there is no pressure to attend calls you attend when you have time. Training is also flexible to a certain extent depending on your level of involvement and training. I'm at an intermediate level, I have all the basic skills needed to preform wildfire suppression, basic structural/urban assessment and suppression, hazmat and minor rescue. I'm happy to turn out to this level, I also take responsibility of maintaining this level of qualification and it's requirements to maintain competency. The option is there to take the next step up into a leadership or advanced firefighting role but I feel I have insufficient experience to preform at this level and working full time would put me under increased pressure to maintain these skills.

In Australia EMS and Fire are totally different services. While I am the crew medic our appliances only carry basic first aid equipment, I do not respond in a medical capacity. If we get to a scene were someone is injured I will apply basic first aid until the paramedics arrive, the local paramedics know I'm a nurse and will ask for help if they need it.

There is no need for all this “them and us” rubbish, we all flying under the emergency services banner – we should all work as a team.

Regrettably, Timmy, some always will be in an "Us versus Them" mentality.

So very true Richard, but unfortunately it is the others which we need when we or they get into trouble. I don't think EMS belongs out of public safety, but should be one unto itself - there is no talk of combining police and fire - totally separate things. But oh yeah, cops work accidents and firefighters extricate so they could be together, and cops could be first responders ! Granted there are a few rare places that have cross trained ems/pd services (ohio is one place off top of my head). We all have to work together, but yet we are separate and should respect each in the job they do and appreciate them doing it well. We depend on one another - us when an officer is injured, the cops when we have a combative patient, fire when we have an entrapped pt. Can't we please just play together nicely? No more peeing in the sandbox children !
