Tell the "patient" all they are going to do at the hospital is wash out there eyes, which you can do at home and then you'll have a really expensive eye exam..maybe. So do you still want to go to the hospital?

Wouldn't work for our "victims". We have the "lock up itis" where a mope fakes injury or illness, as if a trip to an ER will somehow get him released from custody. The police remind the perp that this will merely delay their processing and probably cost them another night in jail because of the delay. They don't care. It's not like most of them need to worry about losing time at work. LOL

I go similarly.

"Sir/ma'am, I understand you want to go to the hospital. I am obligated to tell you that, as I see you as someone in custody, you are already 'in the system', which means whether or not you get seen in the ER, you are still going to have to go through processing at central booking, and arraignment court. Going to the ER will only postpone going through the system. I neither know what you are charged with, or care to know, as I am here in a medical capacity, not a legal one. What happens in Central booking or court is something over which I have no control. "

After evaluating the illness or injury...

"Per my medical evaluation, my recommendation for you is...Do you still want to be seen in the ER?"

If they want to go, an officer will cuff and leg chain them, they either get placed in, or walk UNDER LEO ESCORT (!), into my ambulance, and off we go to the nearest appropriate ER. On completion at the ER, the accompanying LEO calls the precinct, and a patrol car responds to transport the prisoner where they next go, "in the system".If they decide they don't want to go to the ER, I have them sign the Refused Medical Assistance (RMA) line on my Electronic readable Pre-hospital Care Report (E-PCR), and have a LEO, preferably the arresting officer, sign as witness to the RMA, and go to "Available for assignment" status.

A small bit of background, the 2007 Grey Cup was our Canadian Football League championship game in which our Saskatchewan RoughRiders beat their Winnipeg Blue Bombers. :)

Too bad they forgot how to count since then.... I seem to remember on my practicum a preceptor threatening to make me push the unit to the next call for being a Stamps fan (i'm from there, or as it is to be known in this thread YYC)

Also from my practicum, I seem to remember Saskatoon's service carrying a wipe that was supposed to take away the burn, i've also heard that yogurt works too (who knew?)

Never had to deal with tazer barbs though, isnt there a tool for pushing in the barbs to make removal much easier?

Two items to get some documentation on:

1) Yogurt, or Baby Shampoo, for reduction of pain from pepper spray to the eyes, and

2) Meat tenderizer, like Adolph's (brand) for reduction of pain from jellyfish stings (exclusive of Portugese Man-o-War, which can kill.)

The TASER barbs are like the barbs of a small fishing hook, on an inch long "harpoon". Actually, two of them, both attached to a small diameter wire. The LEO using them has to be closer than 25-30 feet from the target, or they are too far for the wire to reach.

For more on the TASER, go to their home page at http://www.taser.com/pages/default.aspx
