There are lots of places in Fairfax county to live. Pretty much pick a town and there are good areas. Springfield is nice. Burke, Annandale, Fairfax and more. Don't let the online postings fool you.

Alex EMS personnel are not, repeat not, firefighters. It may say Alexandria FD on the side of the truck, but it is essentially a third-service EMS organization. If I were to go back, they would definitely be who I wanted to work for (coming from a former knuckle dragger at a city FD in the area).

I stand corrected. Alexandria FD is EMS only. Did not know that. DC Fire used to have stand along EMS, but they no longer do. They are making all single role providers go to fire school....

There are recurrent discussions about fire based EMS, the influence of the IAFF on maintaining fire based EMS services and the detrimental effects seen in delivery of EMS in fire based services due, in part, to the IAFF insisting on fire based EMS delivery.

There have been many discussions in here about it. I'm sure a brief search here and on Google will offer a wealth of discussion material if you wanted to research the topic.
