He's got plenty of money. He's looking to spend some of it.

He could always apply it to the ERDoc Student Loan Repayment Fund. He won't get much bang for his buck but if he has money burning a hole in his pocket it's a great place to get rid of it.

I just love how active this topic is. It's great to see so many hobbies that people have and do.

Horses! One month a year I am a counselor at a kids horse camp. It is the highlight of my year. If I could make a career out of it I may seriously consider it.

It might have been a good idea had you not joined 1.5 years after I finished my residency (translation: vocational training). It's almost impossible to do another residency (and why the hell would I want to do that again?).

Really? It's not overly common here but it does happen; mainly in anaesthesia, emergency medicine and intensive care medicine (one can get any one of those specialisations and then do another without too much effort but some effort is required) but there are others e.g. FRACMA (medical administration) is probably the next common one which people get having gotten another vocational specialisation usually FRNZCGP (general practice)

Anecdotally it seems very difficult in US to get a residency spot (Registrar post)

I am currently also enjoying the hobby of ignoring a psychology assignment (DIE PSYCHOLOGY DIE!)

As for the difficulty in getting a spot, that all depends on what specialty you go into. Specialties with awesome pay and bankers hours (derm, ophtho) are highly competitive. You can pretty much walk into an IM, Peds, FM or Gen surg position (though not necessarily at a competitive program). It's almost impossible to do a second residency because the goverment pretty much pays the hospitals for the residency positions and they don't like to pay for the same thing twice.

It seems there is so much competition in US; here if you pass and get your medical degree nobody cares what grades you get and we don't have USMLE or equivalent so "step scores" don't exist; one of our medical schools only has distinction/pass/fail no grades for the medical degree and the other is introducing it in 2013 by the looks.

I also hear it is extremely difficult to get residency spot as an IMG; sigh!
