While they should have had their bunker gear, to say that their desire to look like heroes overrode common sense is without proof. They saw a fire, they put it out...job done. Would we be having this discussion if they were in tuxes? I think not.

Rules is rules.....no matter how dumb they may be. We had a local paid FF die in a casino hotel of an AMI while in bed with someone other than his wife. But since it was within 24 hours of his last emergency call, it was considered a LODD. (I will point out he did not get the traditional FF funeral)

And I'd heard, though unverified as I don't remember where, that it's now 48hrs, as the stress from the last call may have been the catalyst for the death...

I hope that is not what you think as a matter of fact I am sure that I am now taking what you mean out of context, if so, I am sorry.

That is my point. We should not judge them by the mistakes but rather by their intentions. These men, along with THOUSANDS of others have taken shortcuts, gone too fast or have been just plain LUCKY too. Many of them have died and we call them Heroes, despite the mistakes that ended up causing their demise.

well if an over zealous FF or EMT was driving too fast, hit a tree and killed them self or forbid any one else YES they would be an idiot...........yes we all make mistakes, however we are also taught from day one....dont become a casualty yourself...............driving so fast you have an accident causing a death is not silly, its not a mistake...its a criminal offence......we should not have time in this profession for people that act like that......too many wankers are wanna be's and look how they are refered to on this site.

How could anyone in this line of work condone the action of someone driving so fast it can cause death...........makes me wonder what you have come to believe.

If I had a probie that acted in this way, then they would be having tea and bikies with the boss for their actions........If they killed someone then IDIOT and MORON would not be strong enough words.......thats my 2 bobs worth.....

where do I get a job with that department if that is the 'duty' they get to do , we would all sign up...........bet if the service funeral did happen, who would they give the flag to?

Now Spenac, the naked part depends on the fire fighter. If it's some of the firefighters that I've worked with maybe not but some of the ladies, if they were naked, well we need to really decide if bunker gear is really necessary.

Craig, I hear you. Taking short cuts and all that. What about re-capping needles. WE all used to do that. Remember back in the day. We didn't give it a second thought. Just re-cap and go. How many of your co-workers got needle sticks. It was just standard practice. New guidelines came in to play. We were told not to do it. But we kept doing it as it was just so easy to do. WE still knew those medics who got needle sticks.

That one needle, poke, infectious disease either hepatitis or HIV, ends your career, ends your life. LODD.

Taking shortcuts, ends your life. Not knowing you have the disease also may end others lives. Same analogy as the fast driver. It's our decisions that affect not only us but has a cascade affect downline to many many others. WE don't see that cascade effect until something happens. It might not happen now, or tomorrow but when it does the results and outcomes are right there in front of our faces. That's why I agree with your statement of Nipping it in the bud at the source before it happens.

Can you honestly tell me that someone driving hells bent to a firehouse to get on a fire truck and then he wrecks his car and kills himself is a hero? What if he was the only medical responder that was able to respond that day and by his not arriving safely to the firehouse that day by causing his death that day caused the delay of medical care that caused the death of the patient that he was originally going to help that day? Can you honestly call that person a hero? I certainly will not put the mantle of hero on that person..
