I became an EMT at age 19 in 1974, in the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation EMS in 1985 at age 31, "grandfathered" in to the FDNY with the EMS "Merger" of 1996 at age 42.

Already posted, was a link to the job requirements, which stated it was OK to apply at age 18, to the FDNY, yet someone stated to the poster that one had to be 21 to do so. Therefore, I have no difinitive answer. I suggest you contact the FDNY and specifically ask (then post the answer here).

Which we have come full circle back to the original advice that was given in the first 3-5 responses. Call the organization you have a question of. As has been mentioned before, why take the stated opinion of a group of people when the GOLD standard answer is just as simple as a phone call away.

In fact, the city of New York has made it so simple that even a cave man can apply to be a fireman/emt/paramedic that you can do this all by phone.

Go back after you read this answer, click on the website in the first response after the OP Post, and look for the phone number, call it and then you too can apply by phone. How simple is that. Since the underlying theme of all these questions that get answered like this, the OP is no-where to be found yet we are still giving them answers.

So here's the last freebie from ye ole Captain, Do your own homework at least. Do a web search, make a phone call, and ask the question yourself. The answer you get will often be the completely correct answer. Then and only then if you don't like that answer, come here and we will give you the answer you like because everyone here is an expert at everything. But at least put some EFFORT into finding the answer yourself.

Isn't being a caveman a requirement to be a FF?

No, just an EMS chief!

If any of them, past or present, are on here, you do realize I am just joking, right? (except "Big Bird")

18 is the age to become an emt, 21, is the age to get hired at most places because of driving insurance reasons.

FYI, that's what they told me at my VAC, when I joined at age 19.
