I see these used a lot around here and am a bit confused. Maybe it is just my state? But I was told these were no longer in use.

Iowa no longer certifies Basics, or intermediates.

I am trying to avoid looking totally stupid when replying, Heck, maybe I already do. Wouldn't be the first time, but I have a thick skin.

In all.seriousness, are these still being recertified in other states? Or is this more a local thing?

Most NR states are making the change as you listed. Not all but most.

Just wait until you have to wrap your head around PCP, ICP, ACP, and CCP designations.

Ill be nationally registered for a couple years and if I want to stay that way, ill hand to do the paperwork myself and I believe I will. My training officer says its a headache, but I believe it is worth it. Iowa will accept anyone with a NR but once it expires they usually just recertify Iowa , but it is good to know it isn't across the board.

In Virginia, we still use EMT-B, EMT-I, and EMT-P (Paramedic).

States are pretty much free to define their own EMS levels as they see fit; however, most will follow the Department of Transportation guidelines regardless of what they may call their internal levels of providers. For example, New Mexico mandates NREMT Advanced EMT credentials but New Mexico still calls their "mid-level" EMS provider an EMT-Intermediate. I doubt every state will ever get on board with consistent names across the board. This is why maintaining NREMT credentials is so important, because it allows you to frequently apply for reciprocity as a provider in another state regardless of the naming issues and with NREMT credentials, everybody who has said credential is assured that they have met a minimal educational requirement regardless of state differences.

In my state there's no EMT-I any longer. It now goes EMR, EMT-B, then EMT-P.

We never did have the EMT thing. We used to have level one to level five. Level one being a trainee/ probationary and level five was a paramedic. Now that we have all the name paramedic we have paramedic student, paramedic intern, paramedic and intensive care paramedic...I still slip and call everyone ambo's and ICP's frogs
