Doing aid stations for city marathons

Recommended Posts

Medic experiences with marathon Sid dtations(volunteer or otherwise:)

We just finished doing Ogden Utah 26k marathon aid station with Med reserves n red. Cross, it was awesome! Some cases of panic attacks, hypothermia(raining n wet @ 45 degrees) that wasn't awesome part;) but the experience was interesting n some pt complaints were new to me ( never did marathon before) like bleeding nipples on the guys because of friction. Lots of icy hot :) for sore or spasm muscles, some cases of dehydration , including low K and Na etc we ran short. On supplies n got creative while waiting for back up, all n all fun experience I really admire the fortitude of the runners!

Sorry spell check: "situations "is the word in topic

Body Glide, vasoline, band aids or medical tape to prevent nipple chafing. Duct tape will work. But damn! That'll smart taking it off.

Was it that they were really low K or low Na? Or was it relative to the amount of fluids they took in on the course? There's some interesting reading out there about relative hyponatremia especially in marathoners. It gets more interesting when people start throwing in NSAIDs like ibuprofen.

I've heard good things about the Ogden Marathon. Running in Utah is fun. (Well, running almost anywhere is fun.) I paced a runner at the Wasatch 100 a few years ago. It was a blast.

You could join those runners, too, you know?
