Anyone know how to go about reactivate an expired emt license. Mine expired 2000 when I left NYC. Do I need to take the course again or just a refresher course.

Don't know about NYC, but most states require course afer 3 years of inactive service..

5 years out of ems? Thats a lot. I'd take the course again. I know Missouri requires full retraining after I believe 3 years.

It depends state to state, in Ga. if your license expires for a year you have to go through the class again.

Ruff... I'd have to check, but I think it's 2 years in MO.... within your Registry time frame, or some such.... 5 years would = Retraining, which is not really a bad thing.

In NJ i think its full course after 1 yr expiration.

Thank You all for your replies. Now what I need to know is which state accepts emt national certification and particularly CA, AZ, and NV; any other states please let me know. And what web site and who administer the national certification ???

Here is their link and surprisingly enough, it has all the information you need. I say this again to anyone who reads this. DO not rely on secondhand information in forums with regards to your certification when obviously you have a computer and internet and can access the cold hard truth with a simple click of the mouse.

The site tells you which states do and do not accept NREMt, if you need to redo the course or not, and if that doesnt help, they also have email and phone contact information so you can call yourself.

My recommendation is that you redo the course, you have been out too long. Of course, I dont know where you could go anyways without redoing having been expired that long, but hey I dont know for sure, so I would suggest looking at the site.

If I remember the NYS DoH rules, when the EMT card expires at midnight of the expiration date, the holder can not refer to themselves as an EMT.

If they can get into a refresher class before one calendar year from that expiration date (and pass, of course!), then, they don't need to take the full initial class again. However, at one year and one day, if not already in a class, the individual needs to take the initial basic class.

It sounds like you are trying to say that your NY EMT expired, but you have been certified somewhere else. If THAT is the case, you need to check into reciprocity. Many states will allow certified parties from other states to apply for certification in their state. Some require some type of test, others do not. Contact the NY EMS office directly with your questions. There should be someone in the state office willing to help you. If you can find an email address on their website, it may be easier to get a response that way than to attempt to contact them by phone.
