Once you pass all the exams and finally land a job with a service, about how long is the on-site training the company gives you, before you can actually go on calls? any difference between privates or public services?

It is all dependent on the company. I have seen anywhere from immidiately to several months before you are off orientation. I have not seen any difference from private to municipal.

I've started same day, ive done a month or more of orientation first. LOTS of variables there.

No differences really...

Why do you ask?

my first day after map study and orientation to the company I got pulled on a unit without a preceptor and we drove to a pediatric code blue. That was my first call as an EMT.. Went on that day to run a mva with 2 class 1 patients and then to end the day, ran a adult code.

Jumped right into the fire.

Usually after a couple weeks of orientation your on the truck with an FTO. Your time with an FTO can vary from a few weeks to a couple months depending on your progress.

We have a minimum of 40 hours (for tenured people familiar with EMS in our area) to 80 hours with an FTO. That is after a pre-hire test. There is then a post hire test after that; it is similar to the NR.

If they do OK, but not pass, they may have another 40 hours. If they don't pass then, bu-bye.

well here is my situation, maybe you guys can provide some advice....once i finish the emtb course, i will be graduating college pretty much at the same time. i plan on moving back home to CT for a couple months before i head out on my own somewhere. but im soo anxious to start, that id like to pick up some hours/experience while home in CT for those few months. but if the training can take up to a few months, i guess its not really worth it now is it? your thoughts...?
