From what I have read of the studies, actually in comparison of the "heart attacks" may not have been linked with the study or medication, but possible underlying previous cardiac problems. Again, like MAST trouser studies, it is difficult to pin-point subjects... since outcome measures and variables are so wide.

The patient that needs to have traumatic intervention or traumatic resuscitation, criteria off-sets the null standards. So would they had died any way ? Again, this is the problem with these types of studies. I believe this is also why the study is still continuing.

It was from one of the two stories I mentioned in another thread on here. The CNN link is gone and I the other aticle was from the Wallstreet Journal. At the time I found a cached version of it Google, but I can't anymore.

I don't know what the P values were, but it seems to me 10 out of 81 (with 2 deaths) is pretty signficant compared to 0 out of 71. I understand that some have underlying cardiac problems, but that's what a control group's for!

Even if as an article claimed, the doctors administered it wrong to the ones who ended up having a heart attack, wouldn't it be irresponsible not to do an intermediate study FIRST to confirm the causes before such a large study? That's why there's such controversy surrounding it.

There has been a wealth of posts here on this topic and soem of the studies were posted in other threads. I bet if you do a quick search you'll find them. if not, PM me and I can send you some.

Seems as if Hospital Wing Air Medical out of Memphis TN Participated in the study with one of the blood substitutes, I do believe it was polyheme, will have to research and see what they came up with.

I was extremely curious about this as well. When I was going through class, three of the services we were to do our ride time with were participating in the study. I actually called northfield labs with a bunch of questions, which I have to say, they were more than gracious about taking their time to answer. They gave me additional resources to look up with both the positive and negatives on it (I'd have to find the list, if I do, I'll post it), but overall it has gotten good reviews around my area IF the protocols are followed for administration of it (it seems some problems have occurred in contraindicated patients). I think this is the same as any new med or whatever, in the end one must decide if it actually provides a benefit. Around here it definitely does as the transport times can sometimes be long, and due to the landscape frequently choppers can't fly. Also, in the event of a negative reaction to the polyheme, true blood is NEVER withheld ! This is completely contrary to what some people think, once you get it, it does not mean that you will not receive blood at all, for our area, it was during transport only. If additional blood was needed, it was given at the hospital. We've seen great results from it. Also, in most areas where they are doing the study, they had a public education meeting which featured a lab person from northfield, a local medical director of the study from a trauma center, the directors of the EMS/Fire services participating, and the public. The public is given the option of not participating, they wear a wristband (very similar to the DNR idea) stating they do not wish to participate in the study. If you want good information, contact northfield and a local med director who is supervising the study (northfield can provide that info for you). Hopefully this will show further postitve results and be an assett to services everywhere !
