Hey all, wondering if any of you have watched this film with Nicholas Cage?

But I was just curious, how do you guys feel this movie represents the paramedic/EMT profession and lifestyle?

I personally love this movie even though some parts are over the top and was just curious how all the medical professionals feel about it.

Even though the movie portrays EMS professionals in an outrageously terrible manner, I still love it.

Kind of like pilots liking Top Gun.

With the understanding that EMS isn't like that, it wasn't too bad.

I'm a particular fan of the "Narcan Scene".

As an aside, I tried to read the book, and I can recommend highly against it. It's nealry verbatim from the movie, with absolutely awful narration filling in the spaces between the characters' lines.

it keeps getting funnier every time i see it

wonderfully funny ! I especially enjoy the narcan scene, and the ambulance beating scene (I wish that I could do that to a few of our older ambulance before we got our new glory trucks -ah how I love 'em). We had to watch it in class and point out all the inaccuracies, but then watched it all together and had a great laugh. Good movie. Haven't read the book though, but would be interesting to.

Oh man, I remember seeing that in the theatre back in 1999. As I recall, what made me want to see the movie in the first place was the trailer, which featured a unit rolling over on a city street... Man, I'd never seen something like that before!

Back when I first saw it, I really liked it for its portrayal of human vulnerability and the emotions the characters portrayed... Seeing it again recently, I had a much different perspective... I just couldn't get past the main character's self-blame, flashbacks, anxiety, and substance abuse. I kept thinking "man, this guy has PTSD, comorbid substance abuse problems, as well as other mood and possibly psychotic issues". Yeah, I was a psyc major... Anyway, what bothered me is the fact that a guy like that would be on the road at all... Honestly, if you saw a coworker acting the way the Nic Cage character did, wouldn't you want him to get treatment, ASAP?

All complaints aside though, I thought it was an entertaining film-- one of those ones where you just have to suspend your disbelief and enjoy the drama. I thought the characters were excellent, as well as the theme of failure and redemption. Overall, pretty good, but I say, don't expect 100% realism! (though when can you ever, with movies!)

CART DRIVER

Bring out your dead!

There are legs stick out of windows and doors. Two MEN are fighting in

the mud - covered from head to foot in it. Another MAN is on his hands

in knees shoveling mud into his mouth. We just catch sight of a MAN

falling into a well.

CART DRIVER

Bring out your dead!

LARGE MAN

Here's one!

CART DRIVER

Ninepence.

BODY

I'm not dead!

CART DRIVER

What?

LARGE MAN

Nothing... There's your ninepence.

BODY

I'm not dead!

CART DRIVER

'Ere. He says he's not dead.

LARGE MAN

Yes he is.

BODY

I'm not!

CART DRIVER

He isn't.

LARGE MAN

He will be soon. He's very ill.

BODY

I'm getting better!

LARGE MAN

You're not. You'll be stone dead in a few minutes.

CART DRIVER

I can't take him like this. It's against regulations.

BODY

I don't want to go on the cart.

LARGE MAN

Don't be such a baby.

CART DRIVER

I can't take him.

BODY

I feel fine.

LARGE MAN

Do me a favor.

CART DRIVER

I can't.

LARGE MAN

Well, can you hang around a couple of minutes. He won't be long.

CART DRIVER

I promised I'd be at the Robinson's. They've lost nine today.

LARGE MAN

When's your next round?

CART DRIVER

Thursday.

BODY

I think I'll go for a walk.

LARGE MAN

You're not fooling anyone you know.

(to CART DRIVER)

Isn't there anything you could do?

BODY

(singing unrecognizably)

I feel happy... I feel happy.

The CART DRIVER looks at the LARGE MAN for a moment. Then they both do

a quick furtive look up and down the street. The CART DRIVER very

swiftly brings up a club and hits the OLD MAN. (Out of shot but the

singing stops after a loud bonk noise.)

LARGE MAN

(handing over the money at last)

Thanks very much.

CART DRIVER

That's all right. See you on Thursday.

Or is this the wrong 'bring out your dead? ;)

Haha, I love that movie! Though I'd say The Meaning of Life was my favourite Python film... 8)

I recall watching that movie in 2000 when it got to Tel Aviv.

It's main message to me was not about EMS at all, though the whole thing took place in "EMS world".

This goes to all us escapists:

[align=center:46a74acfa5]

INT. FIRST FLOOR--DAY

Mary, wearing a burgundy robe, opens the door. Frank says

nothing. Her expression darkens.

Frank looks at her again: it's not Mary, it's Rose. Mary has

Rose's face.

FRANK

He's dead, Rose. Your father passed.

ROSE/MARY

How can that be? He was getting

better.

FRANK

He coded. They shocked him one too

many times. I'm sorry.

ROSE/MARY

He was tough. You did all you could.

FRANK

I'm sorry.

ROSE/MARY

You have to keep the body going until

the brain and heart recover enough

to go on their own.

Frank nods.

- But maybe that's just me.
