Remove Rated R and Rated X Programs From Your EMS Station ?

As far as HBO's Real Sex goes i don't feel that is the same as a rated R movie. It is labeled adult everywhere I have seen and as i have already stated i do not feel this appropriate for the station, it is porn. But at the same time if my 16 yo daughter did feel uncomfortable I would expect her to leave or i would go pick her up and take her home if that's what she wanted and i would expect her to go and speak to a superior about the crew mentioned watching something of a pornographic nature. If they cant follow the rules in the station then why would i want my daughter learning from them in an ambulance anyway. But I wold not have any problems with her watching Rescue Me, American Pie, Saved, Saving Private Ryan or any other R rated movie with a crew of young males or for that matter males of any age. If she is my daughter i am sure she has heard a gamut of curse words at one point or another. If she wants to get into this field then I am sure The gore won't bother her. And considering she is female she see's her own boobs every day, I don't think someone else's will make her feel that uncomfortable. She will probably have seen and R rated movie before if she is sixteen and I am in EMS so you know she is going to public school so she has probably heard and seen a lot worse already than what in an R rated movie.

If the greater issue is professionalism then, as AZCEP noted, you have to paint with such a broad stroke that you're setting everyone, including yourself, up to fail.

Is watching a movie at the station unprofessional? No more so than it would be to watch the same thing at home.

But why stop there? Smoking presents an unprofessional image. As does swearing. As does being a fat slob. As does wearing an untucked shirt, rolled up flight suit sleeves, messy hair after taking off a helmet after a 40 minute flight in an 110 degree cockpit (damned air conditioning). If you're going to address whether or not something is professional you can't stop with one, for the most part unseen, issue.

I think the point that you're trying to get at relates more to a hostile work environment which can include, but is not limited to, sexual harassment. If you find something offensive at work you need to try and work it out with the person/people immediately involved. If that doesn't work, then you go to the boss and file a complaint. An investigation will ensue and the results will either see you vindicated or ostracized or both. Not that it shouldn't be done. Just be prepared for the results whether they work in your favor or not.

Why should your rights trample mine, indeed! Don't like it? Leave the room. Turn it off. I'm sure those shiny federals could use an extra buff or two.

But as has been mentioned, you have yet cut to the chase. Others have brought up greater issues regarding professionalism and you ignore it and head back to the movie issue. Why? What happened that has you stuck on this particular issue.

Someone else mentioned that EMS is a tough field. I get spit on, vomited on, cursed at, sworn to, threatened and worse pretty much every day I go to work. And then I have to deal with my coworkers. If I can handle that then pretty much anything my coworkers dish out is cake (preferably cheese cake...to make sure my belly hangs out from under my untucked shirt :roll: ).

So come clean there, sparky. What's your deal?

Wow! This thread makes my head hurt!.. My humble opinion, which this is actually a great debate.

The EMS service should not being subscribed to adult orientated cable services, meaning HBO, Showtime, etc. that can be labeled "soft porn", and definitely not any hard care as well. Cable programs, that routinely have explicit violence, and sexual contents.

Sure, anyone can claim foul, and yes a service has to be careful. We personally have routine cable ( no HBO, etc. ) We do allow R rated movies to be shown if : It is agreeable between the partners, or where it is not demanded that another watch it. We have at least 2 televisions at each station as well as DVD/Tape players, 6 at headquarters. The rule is the one wanting to watch it will ask each person if it is okay? If they do not want to watch or participate they can watch at a another location.

This happens a lot, not because of porn, or even R rated movies, just because, many do not enjoy each others taste in entertainment. I feel that this as well excuses the EMS from its responsibilities. There is an option, and the courts look for that as well.

Now, this is as strange as well. I have a fellow classmate that was offended that we had to watch "graphic videos" of advanced patient assessment. Now, mind you they were very in detail and "close up" on pelvics, rectal, genitalia examination. I was surprised since this is a NP class, and she was already an RN, with more than 20+ years experience.

She felt that it was too "graphic" and could had used illustration, drawings, etc. in lieu of live models.

The response from the University was .. sorry, you felt that way. You are learning assessment, and will required to perform, comprehend, on live subjects, and patients. (Basically, get over it!)

One has to remember that our humor, behavior, has been challenged in courts and there is much research of the oddity of the EMS personal. Some, courts has determined some of this the "norm of the working environment" and disreguards such ,where as in the public it would not.

Good solution, it is pretty much the same that we have employed, although rated x is never permitted, which I am sure is the same for your group. Can you discuss whether or not the move was due to something that had happened in your organization, or just out of fear of potential problems ?

No Porn allowed. I do not know if this was in response to any kind of problem, it was the way things were when I arrived. I personally think we only have basic cable because it was too expensive with the movie channels! Also, not too many movies get watched, a lot of X-Box games. Now there is some offensive material!!

Sorry you have misread my intentions. I havent been in a church since I was 14, so you can hardly call me religous. Thus, my intent has no basis in any of my own personal beliefs (although my professional beliefs should be glaring through by now). This is about what is professional in a business setting ? As to all those who are also including soap operas, tv shows, and R movies without nudity; you raise good points. But I think the answer is in the following question that I have asked several times: Would you feel comfortable watching any of these shows in the presence of a citizen, a local elected official, a school-group, or your department's Chaplain (not because they walked in for a moment -- lets say they are spending the day with you to learn more about your department) ? If the answer is no, I would turn it off, then I think you have answered the question about whether or not it is professional ? It kind of falls into the old axiom for teenagers, "If you wont do it in front of your parents, its probably wrong". If you have to change the behavior when someone enters the room, I think the behavior should be questioned ? The video games are a new twist that I havent thought of, which raises yet another good question, since many of them have graphic themes.

Great debate, keep it up, prove me wrong.

You know the fact is this is a firecracker issue all around. I think we as a society need to be careful in carrying this PC thing too far. At some point sooner or later we are going to realize that doing so is at a certain point a detriment. The reality is the world is a harsh cruel place where terrible things happen and the responsibility for that is partially that of the individual involved. Furthermore, this field exposes us to many things and situations which the average coproation could never dream of imagining. With the exception oif unwanted-forced advances, etc..; people who do this need to grow up and get with the program. They want to be shielded and not accept responsibilty as much as possible, than do something else. this is a harsh environment and you need to be able to weather that and stand on your own to stay in it.

Weeks after a controversial “Rescue Me” episode in which Tommy Gavin (Denis Leary) sexually assaulted his estranged wife Janet (Andrea Roth), the rageaholic firefighter is involved in another sex crime.

This time, he’s the victim.

In tonight’s episode “Satisfaction” (at 10), Tommy’s sometime lover Sheila (Callie Thorne), jealous over Tommy’s shenanigans with his ex-sister-in-law Angela (Marisa Tomei), drugs him, mounts him and achieves orgasm, then smashes up his place and lets the recovering alcoholic think he fell off the wagon and blacked out the entire episode.

“I understand the need for revenge,” she says at one point.

Responding to fans who were angry that Janet seemed to enjoy being raped, series co-creator Peter Tolan promised last month Tommy would suffer some karmic payback for the June 20 attack. But this latest plot twist is no comfort. It won’t stifle “Rescue Me’s” growing reputation for the worst depictions of women on any series. Shelia - unbalanced from grief over the death of her husband, Tommy’s cousin, in 9/11 - is just another in a string of sexual psychos.

With every episode, “Rescue Me” becomes more of a vanity project for the Worcester native. How can every female be obsessed with him? This is Denis Leary we’re talking about. His firefighter looks like an ad for middle-aged manorexia and has the personality of roadkill.

In other storylines, Maggie (Tatum O’Neal) provokes boyfriend Sean (Steven Pasquale) to beat up other guys because it turns her on. Mike “Probie” (Michael Lombardi) hooks up with a girl who likes the challenge of turning gay guys straight. Probie, who’s been getting oral sex from his construction-worker roommate, doesn’t think that makes him gay.

The raunchy plot twists have lit a fire under “Rescue Me’s” ratings. The show is up 10 percent over last year. FX renewed the show last week for a fourth season, and Leary is nominated for an Emmy for outstanding actor in a lead dramatic series.

WINNIPEG - Winnipeg's firefighters, already under the microscope for bad behaviour, admitted on Tuesday that a group of children on a firehouse visit were accidentally shown a pornographic video.

Fire Chief Wes Shoemaker told a news conference on Tuesday that the video accident happened some time last year.

A class of young schoolchildren showed up at the firehall for a tour to find the paramedics and firefighters away on a call.

A fire department employee offered to show the kids a fire safety video while they waited for the firefighters to return. That's when the porn tape was accidentally played.

Shoemaker said the people involved were disciplined.

Firefighters at a different fire hall were suspended earlier this year after they were caught partying in the station, and giving drunk visitors a ride home in a fire truck.

Three people remain suspended after that incident, which took place in July and came to light last weekend. Ten were initially suspended.

The firefighters' union is upset about the way the incident was handled. The union is threatening defamation lawsuits against the media and management, filing grievances, and asking the mayor to launch an investigation.

A computer that had been also been used to download pornography from the internet, has also been confiscated from a fire hall as part of the ongoing investigation into the July incident.
