Walrus thanks for the clarification. I'm glad to see that you don't do that stuff to other people.

in my first year of being an emt I did some pranks but was very quickly put in my place by more senior members of the agency.

I can relate one experience I had as an emt. I was given a coke with 240 milligrams of lasix in it. I didn't realize why it tasted so bad but I attributed it to the ice in the cup.

I pee'd and pee'd all day and ended up having to return to the station due to feeling so terrible. Next thing I know I'm being transported emergent to the ER for being unresponsive. My electrolytes were on the critical low, my heart rate rhythm were on the critically unstable side. I spent 2 days in the ICU of the hospital and then 3 more days in the general med floor. Needless to say the medic who put the drug in my drink was terminated and lost his license. Pranks are fun sometimes but they have real critical life implications.

I hope you had these boneheads brought up on charges. At the very least it's assault. At best it's attempted murder as chances are you would've died had you not been taken to the ER. That's just outright moronic! WTF were they thinking?

Glad you're ok.

I am assuming there was an ass kicking on general principles here?

Peace,

It's simple.

There is NO reason to have porn in the station.

It's OK to watch an R-rated movie, as long as everyone agrees to it.

I agree that porn isn't appropriate... however, in the "vollie fire" community, both my EMS co's / FD's have digital cable with almost all the channels... Lots of odd things come on after midnight, and in my 7 years around the firehouse, I've not seen porn or other "adult" programming more than a handful of times...

I see NOTHING wrong with adults watching an R-rated movie in station. Now, of course we have minors in the station until about midnight, so can we watch a r-rated movie with a 16 y/o EMT Student present? I'm not sure... this is a bridge my company hasn't stepped off of yet.

As for the Internet? lots of stuff is blocked off... heck - MySpace is blocked off right now, because the management is concerned about "minors doing things online without parental permission"

Maybe the solution is parental waivers - have mom/dad say it is OK for their son/daughter to "generally" watch any R-Rated movie. Same goes for the Internet... for the youth to have ANY access to the Internet, mom/dad must sign a waiver recognizing that the squad cannot control what their child will access online.

At my full time, there is no issue. We only have basic cable. Some people bring in videos, some "unrated", some "R". We have never had a problem. Usually, there are just 2 people in the station, and they discuss amongst themselves.

What makes it less of a problem is that we are so darn busy. We don't usually have time to watch. Also, we have many volunteers ) some under 18), students (medic and EMT), and observers (RN, LPN, and young people thinking about careers). Most study, or review with preceptors. The tapes don't come out.

At my part time, we have full digital cable, with On Demand and PPV. Many watch whatever they want, and there has been no problem. At the main station, office people are there during the day, so TV is usually boring. We have watched On Demand HBO and Showtime, and the boss doesn't mind. No uninvited people are upstairs. And when a sales/insurance rep is there, the TV is off.

Our one station is out in the country, and is not open to the public. As long as no one watched PPV with out paying the company back, what is watched is between the crew members. Never been a problem.

Our 3rd station is inside a volunteer fire department. Since we pay the cable bill, EMS gets control of the remote. There are many teenage firefighters, and the station is owned by the municipality, nothing questionable is on when ANYONE is there. During the day, firefighters stop in, as will police officers and DPW employees.

Teenage firefighters have been yelled at late in the evening. They have watched "hard R" On Demand when EMS is out running calls, and no senior firefighters are with them. There are members who are only allowed in the station for calls, drills, and meetings, as they cannot be trusted. EMS has not had a problem.

Wow, this is a good topic, I havent thought about it before reading this forum, but I guess it is wrong. This type of behavior is not professional, which is proven by all of our's admission that we wouldnt watch it in front of our bosses, political bosses, or company Chaplain. Good thread !
