Hi,

I am currenlty an EMT in NJ, I go to school there, but I live in Los Angeles.

I spoke to the LA County EMS agency, and they said that if i want to reciprocity, (being that I am NREMT certified), I just need to fill out all the paperwork, and and an "expanded scope of practice" course. But none of the courses are in my area, and are schedualed for when I will be home does anyone know of any place that administers such a course online?

Thankx

I'm going to bite my tongue and not even get into the wisdom of expanding your scope of practice from EMT-B into pharmacology and invasive therapy through a quickie online course. If you really think that's all you need, then go for it. Just stay away from my family.

Of course by "expanded" it means administering preprescribed Rx's that are, for the most part, already apart of the standard EMT scope (epi pen, nitro, etc) and dealing with different IFT stuff (saline locks, PVADs, foleys, etc) in an IFT situation (not inserting, etc).

Uh, yeah, what he said. I'm all for online CE classes that build on already obtained schooling, but learning something new by sitting in front of the computer and hitting a few keys is wrong.

That is what I understood as well. Based on their website, the scope of practice mainly reaffirms about administering the meds that emt-b's in NJ can give anyhow.

A good friend of mine went to work in L.A. right out of basic class and had to take the expanded scope class before being hired.

According to him the class does not add anything to your scope of practice, it is two days explaining what is removed from your scope of practice.

I believe....and it's been a bit....that they allow oxygen, splinting etc....but remove almost everything else.

Put on oxygen, call for an intercept....that's pretty much the job I think....I'll try and get him to post here.

BTW I just did some research, I think that LA county is the only ems agency in CA that requires you to take this "extended scope of practice"

(In CA the local counties run the ems system)

Again, catching up on Los Angeles posts.

I had to take the "Expanded" Scope class when I moved down here.

It's a joke. It talks about the medications you can assist with that you were already taught when you took your EMT class...except you can do FEWER medications than you were taught in class. There's also a section on which catheders and IV types you can accept for interfacility transfers. It was a two hour class.
