When I'm off duty from my paid job I'm still "on duty" with my volly dept. I respond direct to scenes so I have a fairly basic BLS bag set up. I usually don't need much because the ambulance is usually not more than about 5 minutes out. Basically gloves, BVM, 4x4s, and some other random junk. If it's not in my district though, I try not to have anything to do with anybody else's emergencies.

I have two personal cell phones, just in case I have to call 911 and a battery dies. I have two holsters that carry a total of 4 trauma shears, 2 bandage shears. 2 tweezers, and 2 mini mags. I also have a glove pouch that holds thirteen pairs of gloves. I also carry five more extra pairs in each of my back pockets. I also have my fanny pack with a basic first aid kit, pocket mask, glucometer, and my Glock. I also always make sure I'm wearing a t-shirt that easily Identifies me as a healthcare provider. I make sure I always have my badge with me, which I keep on a chain around my neck at all times, along with a back up in my wallet, on my belt, and in my glovebox. I also keep a pair of shears in each of my boots, and also a 14" hunting knife strapped to both my legs.

I guess that is most of it, but there is probably more.

My new Gall's Catalog just came in today also, so I'll beable to update this list significantly tomorrow. Gotta love next day shipping.

You forgot your badge!

You know what's funny, I wrote this whole thing out once, and something happened and I had to start over, and I made a point in the first to include the badge, but forgot it in the second. So I just updated for you...

I don't know at exactly what point I realised that you're pulling our chains but it was a fair way down your list... I'm not usually that gullible :D

Me, I always keep a kit in my car when I travel due to the high accident rates on the roads I traverse. I have a fairly large trauma kit bandages, minor meds (panadol) shears, scissors, tweezers, steth, BP cuff, glucometre, tapes, dressings, disposable masks and gowns, guedel airways... that's about it.

(I use my kit at work hence it's reasonably stocked)

On my person I very rarely carry gloves but I used to all the time cos I came across a few patients in public.

Yeah, in all honesty, all I have is a few pairs of gloves, a pocket mask, and anything else (like someone had previously stated) that I pull out of my pockets when I get off shift and throw in the back seat...

thats an interesting list for a bloke from south australia scorpy.....does the CFS have a first responder type thing like the Metro Fire does in melbourne?

I carry a cell phone, gloves and a pocket face shield. Won't leave home without them.

I'm betting that there is not one of us here would wouldn't help somebody who collapsed in front of them, even when they are off-duty. If you know you are going to do it, you might as well be prepared to protect yourself.

No but it's funny you mention that because I wrote up a 21 page report on ambulance services including both the 'Lizard Drinking Report' which was a third party report on SA Ambulance Service and the Generational Health Review, which will cover the next 20-30 years of health in this state. I pointed out deficiencies such as missing key stake holder expectations, expanding response times (from 12 to 17 minutes) case load increases, work cover statistics of injured or burnt out ambos, deinstitutionalisation of mental health patients, aging population, lack of communication with other emergency services, inability to be responsive to other agencies developments, ideas, etc... and how a first response program utilising the 60 or so paramedics that are trained every year but not employed in SA Ambulance... but alas, after meetings with various politicians etc, everyone believes that there is only one ambulance service, there could never be another because no other service could possibly train their people to the same level as SA Ambulance, nor could it operate to the same level and bla bla bla. Forget the fact it works well in other countries, our health department is far too short sighted. *end rant*
