One of the components to applying for an EMT job is to submit a copy of your driving record. I obtained a copy of my DMV report and noticed somthing on there that frightened me. My questions is this. I have a clean record, no accidents or DUIs. However I do have two speeding tickets on my record. When I recieved those tickets I was unable to pay for the tickets and was put on a payment plan set-up by the traffic division of the courts. As a result, my license was put on suspension until those tickets were paid off. Will this suspension allow me not to get hired with a private ambulance company as an EMT? Aside from this, my record is clean. What are some of the requirements to be insured by a private company to drive the rig? Do they look for DUIs and accidents, because in that area im clean.

Would it be to my best interest to explain during my interview why the suspension will appear on my record. To this date everything is all current with no other tickets.

Thanks guys.

I don't think the suspension (especially for that reason) will matter, especially if you are open about it during your interview. They have a copy of your record, there is no reason to lie about it. I think the bigger problem will be the points on your license. I know my company's insurance doesn't allow people with at fault accidents within x amount of years or 2 points. It might be too late, but might I suggest traffic school next time.

Have a really good explanation about how it was just an administrative suspension because you made timely arrangements to pay the tickets or whatever it was.

You want to show responsibility, because it reflects your responsibility at work.

Apparently the others here read this differently than I did, so I guess I'll just have to ask you to be clearer.

Is your licence currently still suspended, or is that all over and done with? If it is currently suspended, forget it. You're screwed. EMTs are a dime a dozen. One who cannot drive is about as in-demand as veggie burger MREs on steak night at the chow hall.

If it is not currently suspended, and all that is cleared up, then yes, they may still have a problem with it. Although, if they were to understand exactly what happened and why the word "suspended" appears on your 27 [cop talk, cuz it makes me feel cool], then they would probably not view it anymore seriously than they would view the two speeding tickets themselves. And, of course, just the two speeding tickets is enough that I would not hire you at your age. Your prospective employer and their insurance company are quite justified in feeling the same way.

As already mentioned, your best bet is to be upfront about it so they know they are going to see the "S" word on your record, but are prepared for it with advanced knowledge that it was no big deal.

Good luck!

In my understanding suspended means you can't drive cause you are suspended. If that is the case then as Dust said and I agree with him "You are hosed" until you get that off your license

And it may never go away - it might show those years as suspended and then an insurance company will want a detailed explanation of the suspension.

The ambulance service as well as the insurance company will want to know something else. If your license is suspended then why are you still driving. If you are suspended I take that to mean that you cannot drive legally.

This my friends is a prime example of how our actions in the past have direct consequences to our future plans and present situations.

I'm not picking on the original poster at all I'm saying that the things you do now have consequences, to quote from Casablanca "Maybe not today, but soon and for the rest of your life"(not complete quote but you get my drift).

for many of us it's too late because our actions have been done and the consequences are here now or will be. But for the youths reading this who are teenagers, please think about what you are doing and try to think long term. Keep in mind that what feels good right now may not feel so good in a year.

If your license was indeed suspended and you weren't supposed to be driving while suspended then the ambulance company and their insurance company will most likely drop you like a hot potato.
