what to buy

should be starting on the rescue in town soon and was wondering what any of you experiance folks would suggest for must have items to carry on your person. I figure a good pair of sheers and other misc things but figure some of you may have other "tricks of the trade" to offer up.

Not a whacker bro, not new to the public safety scene just new to ems. Just like being a firefighter you can learn alot from the guys who have been in the field a while. They know the stuff that works and doesnt because they have tried it before. Thats all im looking for.

Other than a good flashlight, there really isn't anything you need that your employer shouldn't be providing you. And the better employers will provide the flashlight too!

I recommend the Stinger. I specifically recommend against full sized MagLite type lights that can be mistaken for weapons.

Good safety shoes or boots are also highly recommended, but that is something you need to choose by actually wearing them yourself.

Anything else, you either don't need or your employer sucks.

If you want to excel in EMS, your smartest move would be to come to embrace it as a medical profession, and not "public safety." The most important piece of equipment you can have is something you already have between your ears. Exercising your brain with constant education (not to be confused with training) is your best preparation. All of the other accessories are useless without that.

I carry my own shears, a small notepad, and a couple pens-one for the pts and one for me w/a stylus to use on my toughbook.

I can never keep enough gloves on hand. Never have a pen when I need one. I do remember my watch every day, and it sure comes in handy. My L.A. Rescue bag keeps all my other stuff close by and organized. If I respond in my POV, 4D Maglite is an absolute necessity. Makes would- be- troublemakers think twice.
