Your right I should have put more thought into this before diving in head first.

Well, if you are not discouraged from continuing your dive, I hope you will strive to become the quality of provider that raises the value of our profession so that the next generation will have things a little better than we do. That means another two years of school for you though, at the very least. Good luck!

Thanks for accepting my response in the helpful manner in which it was intended.

In west Texas where cost of living is low compared to most many services start basics around $10 hour, up till 4 years ago probably wasn't even the minimum. All levels in several services worked to get pay above fast food and we're working to go higher for all levels at both services I work with.

A number of communitys have raised starting pay in my area as follows: Basic $14, Intermediate $16, Paramedic $18

$25k a year in sonoma county full time.

I think most companies have a set yearly earnings in mind for full time employees then adjust the hourly rate depending on what type of shift you work. Which is why 24 hour shifts pay less per hour than say an 8 hour.

Seven bucks an hour. Thats a good one. I wouldnt bag your groceries for that. I suggest moving out of California, or a career change.

hehehe $7/hr is below minimum wage now in the Socialist Republic of California.

Good! Maybe that will encourage losers from Texas to move there!

Just don't tell them the truth, that $7 dollars an hour is the tax rate in Kalifornia.

But yeah, Spenac is right. Seven bucks an hour isn't a salary. It's a stipend.

This Texas loser ain't going to caly, no sir not for $7. Make it $8 might re-think, nope not even then. Don't take a brain to figure that $14/hr is a lot more beer than $7/hr. :salute:

Just hope those caly hippies stay out of Texas.

$12 and hour for our basics up here in the lower Northeast. I believe that our pay is on the low side for services in our area. On the other hand, you can keep the extra two bucks if it means I'm going to do 6-7 dialysis runs in an 8-hour shift like some of our competitors. At least our Basics have the chance of doing something interesting.

I work as an EMT-B at a municipal EMS system. It pays $12 an hour with a 24 hour a week limit and has no benefits. I run about 3 to 12 calls per 24 hour shift, so I can't complain about being overworked. I am also in the process of getting a second job at a private ambulance ( transport/911) company that is paying $13 an hour with some benefits on a per diem basis.

For a 21 year old, the pay and work flexibility is great while I am in college. However, I don't see myself supporting a family with that kind of salary. Even with ALS pay, I would need serious budget planning to make it through. New Jersey is a very expensive state to live in!

I know of some hospital based EMS systems paying their EMT-B's anywhere from $17 to $19 an hour. However, they get their pick from the best in the state so getting a position there is very competitive.

If you're looking for a healthcare career without having to go to school for a decade, go the nursing route. For example, I have friends starting off with a BSN ( Bachelor of Science in Nursing) with a starting salary of at least $60,000 a year!
