Pimp question for the day:

Wenkeback identified the rhythm before EKGs were widely available or understood. How?

From what I can recall, it really wasn't Dr. Karl at all that made the discovery. Rather it was Luigi Luciani that made the discovery using a frog heart with ligatures around the atria. Dr. Wenkebach was the first to discover the relationship between atrial and ventricular conduction.

Purely physical diagnosis. He observed the jugular venous waves (atrial pulsations) while palpating the arterial pulse, and realized the correlation.

Whenever I think my physical exam skills are up to snuff, I think of this and recognize that I pale by comparison.
