If you've ever had to take in an involuntary committal, you'll know that even with the prospect of the 'softer' leather restraints as opposed to the cold steel of handcuffs means nothing to the patient thats being taken in.

Secondly, if you've got a violent patient, you arent going to want to be in 'close' to them long enough to apply the cuff and strap of the leather restraint system......if the patient HAS to be restrained, you want them restrained as fast as possible, causing as little damage as possible.

Securing a handcuffed patient to a backboard smacks severely to the "Bellevue Sandwich." The patient is on the backboard, and the front of the patient is on the scoop.

The patient vomits, and, due to the board and scoop, is not noticed to be asperating, and you have a dead patient when you get to the hospital, instead of one who might need a 72 hour hold to determine if the reason they are AMS is medical, chemical, or psychological.

I am 34 years in this "Biz", and the Bellevue Sandwich has been illegal in both city and state of New York for almost that entire time. If it is not in your area, presume it soon to be, if you are in a progressive system, as I believe most of you to be.
